Procedure for Making a ruler in

centimeters:

1. Take a string of any length
2. Attach a weight to the end
3. Hold the end of the string without the
weight to the edge of a table
4. Hold the string so that its horizontal to
the edge of the table
5. Release the weight and let it swing
back and forth
6. Have one person start a timer as soon
as the other person releases the
pendulum
7. The person who released the
pendulum should count 15 swings, back
and forth, while the person who set the
timer should stop the timer at 15
seconds.
8. Keep adjusting the length of the string
until the person who is counting and the
person who is setting the timer stop at
the same time

9. Once you have gotten the string to a length

where the pendulum swings 1 second per
swing, take a pen and mark the string where
you were holding it. The length from the mark
to the bottom of the pendulum is 25
centimeter.
10. Now take a piece of paper and cut it so
that its length is the same as the length of the
pendulum from the mark to the bottom of the
pendulum
11. Fold the paper into equal fifths using trial
and error.
12. Draw a line at each fifth
13. Now take a post-it note the size of one
fifth and fold it into five equal sections using
trial and error
14. Cut the post-it note where the folds are so
that you have five equal pieces.
15. These pieces are one centimeter each
and should fit into each section five times.
Make sure that this is true by fitting the one
centimeter piece into one fifth of the paper
five times.
16. Draw a line on your 25 centimeter piece of
paper every centimeter by using one of your
pieces from step 14.

Procedure for making a graduated

cylinder in milliliters:

1. Using your ruler make a 1cm cube
2. Put a small marble into the cube
3. Tape the cube with clear tape so that it
is waterproof
4. Get a clear glass container
5. Put a piece of clear tape on the
container and make sure that it is straight
6. Fill the container halfway with water
7. Mark where the water comes up to on
the tape
A one centimeter cube with a marble inside of it and tape on the outside:

8. Drop the cube into the

container
9. Mark how much the water
rises, the amount it rises is one
mL
10. Take the piece of tape off the
container
11. Take a piece of paper and
copy the markings onto the piece
of paper 10 times
12. Take another piece of clear
tape
13. Copy and label the marking
from the paper onto the tape
14. Put this piece of tape onto the
graduated cylinder, and make
sure it is straight. Also make sure
that the 0mL mark on the tape is
at the bottom of the container,
where the water starts.

Procedure for making a Balance in

grams:

1. Take a burner stand
2. Tape the two top parts together
so that there is no gap between
them. Do not tape the bottom
of
the stand together
3. Tape the bottom of the stand to
a piece of cardboard
4. Take a 28 cm. wooden stick and
mark the halfway point, 14 cm.
5. Put the halfway point onto the
middle of the taped together part
of the stand and tie it there, make
sure that the two sides of the stick
are balanced.

6. Take two plastic cups of the same

size and poke holes into opposite
ends of the cup. Poke the holes near
the top of the cup.
7. Take one of the cups and a piece
of string
8. Pull the piece of string through one
of the holes and then the other
9. Tie the cup to the end of one side
of the wooden stick
10. Do steps 7-8 to the other cup,
except tie the cup onto the side of the
stick that the first cup was not tied to.
Make sure that the string is the same
length
11. Make sure the balance is
balanced on both sides.

Measurments:

Length of rod: 7-7.5 centimeters

Volume of rod: 1-2 milliliters

Mass of rod: 2-3 grams

Density of the rod: 1-3 grams/mL

Procedure for calculating the density of he
rod:

1. Find the volume of the rod by using a
graduated cylinder
2. Record this number. Make sure to include
uncertainties
3. Find the mass of the rod by using the
balance
4. Record this number. Make sure to include
uncertainties
5. Divide the highest measurement you got
for grams by the lowest measurement you
got for volume.
6. Divide the lowest measurement you got
for grams by the highest measurement you
got for volume.
7. The numbers you get from your
calculations in steps 6-7 are the range of
density for your rod.
