nu e pronunat. Aceasta ridic tot felul de ntrebri di
ficile. De ce trebuie s comparm observaiile din uni
versul nostru cu prediciile pentru universul cel mai
probabil? De ce s ne ateptm ca universul nostru s
se numere printre universurile "cele mai probabile", n
tr-un anume sens cuantic? Vom arta c avem toate mo
tivele s ne ateptm ca universul nostru s nu se afle
printre cele mai probabile.
n primul capitol al povestirii noastre am introdus no
iunea de univers n expansiune i am artat c vrsta unui
asemenea univers este strns legat de evoluia observa
torilor. Un univers btrn va produce n mod necesar
stele, care produc elementele nucleare mai grele dect he
liul cerute de evoluia ulterioar a complexitii. n mod
asemntor, putem s ne punem problema de ce exis
tena observatorilor cum suntem noi (sau a observato
rilor care nu seamn neaprat cu noi) presupune ca
valorile numerice ale constantelor naturii s nu fie prea
diferite de cele observate de noi. Dac tria forei gra
vitaionale ar diferi puin sau dac tria forei electro
magnetice ar fi uor perturbat, atunci nu ar putea exista
stele stabile, iar echilibrul fin al proprietilor nucleelor,
atomilor i moleculelor, echilibru care face viaa cu putin,
