PROFESSOR KUBLER
DANAY DIAZ
What
Ive Learned...
As a journalism major, I knew that
English was a class I would have to
exceed in. In high school writing essays
always came easy to me, however,
CSUN has taught me so much.
Professor Kubler truly inspired me to
be the best student I could be. With my
first essay, I was confident that it was
an A paper. However, I received a B+.
Although that is not the end of the
world, that is not where I wanted to be.
He was able to point out my
weaknesses and show me where it was
that I had to improve. He pointed out to
me that many of my sentences were
incomplete, did not have a straight
point, nor did I have a thesis. All issues
I knew I had, but I never knew how to
fix it. With the comments that my
professor gave me, I was able to focus
on those weak points. I reprinted my
essay, read it out loud and made many
comments. Reading it out loud to
myself allowed me to see the multiple
issues I had within my essay. When the
second essay came around, I knew I
had to get an A. I worked hard on what
it was my argument was going to be, so
I could state a strong thesis. I also
printed out my essay before turning it
in, read it out loud, and made many
corrections. With everything that I had
done to prepare my essay, I was able to
get an A- on my second essay. Although
it is not a stretch from my last grade, I
was very proud with my improvement.
ABOUT ME DANAY :)
Im a new freshman at CSUN currently
majoring in journalism. Coming into CSUN I
was not quite sure what to expect. I was ready.
Essay Numero
Uno: Human
Rights VS Bill of
Rights
In my first essay, the main focus is
the issue about the separation of
church and state. The essay
introduces three different court
cases dealing with similar issues.
The first case discussed in the essayElane Photography-a photographer
denied a lesbian couple from
wedding photos, because it went
against the owners religious beliefs.
The company was then sued by the
couple, the couple was victorious.
The second case is very similar, a
local florist would not cater to a gay
marriage, because it was also
against the owners religious beliefs.
The jury has not yet came up with a
verdict. The third was the Hobby
Lobby Case, a very large popular case
which was able to appeal itself into
the supreme court. The case
consisted of female employers who
believed they should be covered for
emergency contraceptives. The
company refused to allow this,
because emergency contraceptives go
against the owners beliefs. In this
case, the company won and do not
RIGHT OR WRONG?
Religion?
Gay Rights?
have to cover female contraceptives.
My view on this is not the popular
one, I believe that the owners are
entitled to turn away customers due
to personal reasons. ------------ In my
first draft of the essay, my stance was
quite unclear. I was unable to bluntly
state my opinion on the cases.
Granted the cases are very
controversial and difficult to choose a
MY ARGUMENT
In the first two cases discussed in my essay, gay couples are suing a
certain company or business for being bias and denying service for
sexual-orientation. Although it is not right to turn away a certain
person or couple because of personal lifestyles, it can be dealt with in
many different ways. Personally, being turned away for being a
woman or a certain way would offend me very much, however, I
would not take it to the extent of suing the company, especially if it
is a small family owned company.
However, in the third case, the company denying employers for
coverage on contraceptives, the company wins. My question is why
would religious beliefs win in the Hobby Lobby case and not in the
other cases?
My argument is that state/house needs to set a law where one side
wins each time, going back and forth will not set justice.
