    Classifying materials
    You will need:
    a range of substances as supplied by your teacher
    CARE Wear eye protection when using the hammer.
    1 Investigate the physical properties of these substances:
    Appearance
    Hardness and brittleness (by hitting the sample with a hammer)
    Solubility in water
    Electrical conductivity of both the solid and the solution if the substance is soluble
    How easily the substance melts when it is heating.
    Design your own equipment for carrying out these investigations. Write down your observations in a
    table such as the one below:
