    Give a chemical test to distinguish between phenol and ethanol.please help me?

    PHENOL is an aromatic compound and it contains an activatedbenzene nucleus. so i


    t will respond to diazo coupling reaction.(for the description of the test see O
    RGANIC chemistry by I.L.FINAR).Butethanol being an aliphatic compound doesnot re
    spond to this test.
    also ethanol gives a sweet smelling yellow precipitate of iodoform when treated
    with I2+NaOH.Phenol doesnot givethis test. When phenol is treated with KBrO3-KBr
    mixture in presenceof acid a precipitate of 2,4,6-tribromo phenol is formed but
    nosuch precipitate with ethanol.
