1). After completing the pre and post FERPA/HIPAA quiz, reflect on something you learned from
this experience and explain how this will impact your teaching (include some specific examples).
The biggest thing that shocked me the most about the FERPA/HIPAA quiz was FERPA
grants a students parent the authority to view all of their information and documentation. This is
valid no matter if the student is a valid adult, due to the fact that the parent or guardian claims the
child on their taxes. I though this information was crazy to me because when I turned 18 I at least
thought that my mom could not go through my mail as she pleasesbut as I learned today
apparently I was wrong.
2). Revisit the demographic and achievement data we collect in education. Your task is to use the
MISchoolData portal to answer the question, "Is your building meeting the learning needs of all
students?" Pick the current year, a grade level, then content area (Math, Reading, Science or
Social Studies). Next look at the different Report Categories (demographic subgroups) and find
one which shows a gap. Look at both the Snapshot and Trend views. Select one view and take a
screenshot of it. View the statewide results for the same criteria. Post your screenshot to your
Digital Portfolio with a short paragraph telling what the data report shows.
The data I have chosen to show are the ACT scores in the 2013-2014 from the Lansing
School District. There are three groups of people that the graphs primarily focus on which are the
following: Economically Disadvantaged Students, Not Economically Disadvantaged Students

and All Students (meaning all the students combined whether theyre economically
disadvantaged or not).

3). Create a survey or quiz that measures "perception and process" data, using one of the survey
resources: PollEverywhere, Socrative, Testmoz, or Google Forms. Have at least 5-10 students
and/or peers take the survey/quiz. Post your questions to your Digital Portfolio and a screenshot
of the results.

4). Think about some questions, surveys, or polls you could use throughout the school year to
collect valuable information to address the gap you found above (in #2). Post at least 3-4
examples of questions, explain the type of data to be collected, and how it could be used to
change/improve instruction to address the gap.
1). Do you have a set time that you do your homework every day?
2). How often do you attend class on time?
3). How many days of school have you missed this semester?

4). Do your parents help you with some of your school work?
5). In class, do you always try to do your best every day on every assignment, and why?
6). Do you feel like your teacher helps you to the best of their ability, and why?
The things that I am searching for when looking at the cause of gaps between
economically advantaged and economically disadvantaged students are how involved are the
parents, does the child have a stable structure within their life and does the child normally attend
school on time to each class? This information is huge in seeing why a student may or may not
be successful within the classroom and over time it transfers from becoming the parents fault to
the students fault. The thing that hurts my heart the most is, how can you blame a student for
failure if they were never given a chance for success in the beginning of their educational life?
