Thing 18
1. Based on your work in "Evaluation & Assessment" thing, you identified a gap. Now you will
need to obtain some school data from your curriculum director, principal, or data warehouse to
dig deeper into understanding this gap. You may want to download the data file from MI School
Data relating to the gap you found. The data you select should represent two or more years of
state testing information if possible. Make sure no student identifying information is visible. Do a
sort on the data, create a graph from the information, and use one or more formulas to
summarize the data (e.g. count of participants, average score, maximum or minimum score,
totals). Post your spreadsheets and charts to your Digital Portfolio with a brief observation of
what you found.

The blue on this pie chart means that 10.2% of the students in
the year 2011-2012 met the benchmark requirements from the
Lansing School District for the mathematics portion on the ACT.

The blue on this pie chart means that 8.9% of the students
in the year 2012-2013 met the benchmark requirements
from the Lansing School District for the mathematics
portion on the ACT.

The blue on this pie chart means that 7.5% of the students in the
year 2013-2014 met the benchmark requirements from the
Lansing School District for the mathematics portion on the ACT.

I found it very astounding that all the public schools were doing poor in the development
of our students education! The most shocking part was that its getting worse from year to year.
I dont know how I should feel because the numbers are so embarrassing compared to every
other school district in Ingham County. I am ashamed, but determined to make sure that I will
never let this happen within my classroom when I begin teaching!
2. Use the Perception or Process data from the poll/survey you conducted in the "Evaluation and
Assessment" activity. Demonstrate the following in your analysis of the data: formulas (e.g.
count of participants, average score, maximum or minimum score, totals), sorting (e.g.
alphabetical, highest/lowest, etc.), and charting (pie, bar, X-Y, etc.).

I used these simple numbers to create my graphs on excel. The information came from
https://www.mischooldata.org/. After going through the data and deciphering from what I needed
and wanted to show, I still cant believe that Lansing School District was ranked so much lower
than all the other districts in our county. I can now understand why parents used school of
choice to get their children out of there. It wasnt because they hated the people who attended
the schools, instead it was for their children or loved ones to get a better education and have a
better chance doing well in some form of higher learning if their child chose to do so.
3. Explain how you might use spreadsheets and online survey/polling in the classroom. Post this
to your Digital Portfolio.
The way I would use a spreadsheet in my classroom would be as a tool to help me with
my grading. I have seen many teachers use Microsoft Excel to keep track of all their students
grades for assignments and test. The thing I like the most about Excel is, if you program your
spreadsheet correctly if automatically does all the calculations for you. I see this being a huge
help in the long-run when youre trying to get that last minute grading done. At the end of the
day I love spreadsheets because they keep my job of keeping track of every little nook-andcranny of my students grades clean, nice and orderly.
