Tutorial 3 : Stress, Strain and Allowable Stresses
1. Two rods, AB and BC, holds a lamp of
weight 40kg in place. The diameters of AB and BC are 10mm and 8mm respectively. Determine the normal stresses in the rods. Assume that the weights of the rods are negligible compared to the weight of the lamp.
2. A beam is supported by in joints at A and B.
The diameter of the pin at A is 20mm and that at B is 30mm. Determine the average shear stress of the pins at A and B. The pin configurations are as shown.
3. A steel component is held by clevis
fasteners as shown. The component weighs 27 kN. The cables have a diameter of 10mm and the pins through the clevises have a diameter of 22 mm. Calculate the axial stress in the cable and the average shear stress in the clevis pins. If both the pins and the cable are made of steel with a yield stress of 280MPa, calculate the safety factor for both the pins and the cable.
4. A tensile axial force P is applied to an
aluminum rod of diameter 20 mm. Due the tensile force, the diameter decreases by 0.022 mm. Calculate the load P. The properties of aluminium are E =70 GPa, =0.33.
