Project Title: Design of a portable table to assist in car

engine overhaul work
Scope
Design and build a portable table to assist mechanics when they have removed an engine from a car
to perform overhaul work. Place focus on the safe design of the load bearing members whilst
ensuring a lightweight design. The project due date is 9th November 2014. For every day overdue,
1% of the final course mark is deducted from the project. You must put, after the title page of the
report, the names, ID numbers, and the responsibilities of each of the group members.

Summary. Please elaborate on what the project was about (1 mark),

what was found out (3 marks), and who did what in project (1
mark).
CAD model. Must be an original design (2 marks) yet lightweight (1
mark). 2 marks for determining and justifying the engine load that
is to be used.
FE model accurately simulates reality (Material (1 mark), loads (1
mark), boundary conditions (1 mark), mesh refined accordingly
using mesh controls (2marks))
Plots (Stress, displacement, factor of safety, buckling) and mesh
convergence table. 1 mark for each plot/table. Loss of marks
will be incurred for inserting unnecessary information, not
indicating by marker where the minimum/maximum
stresses are, having unreadable legends, and not having a
large enough plot from which the stress variations can be
adequately seen.
Revised optimized model with redesign of parts. 5 marks for
showing that stresses in the revised model were
reduced/optimized. Loss of marks will be incurred for
inserting unnecessary information, not indicating by marker
where the minimum/maximum stresses are, having
unreadable legends, and not having a large enough plot from
which the stress variations can be adequately seen.
Individual interview with candidate about project and SolidWorks
lessons. At most 2 questions related to the project and SolidWorks
simulation software.
