Penspinning(alsoknownaspentwirling,penmawashiandpentricks)isaform
ofobjectmanipulationthatinvolvesthedeftmanipulationofawritinginstrument
withone'shands.Althoughitisoftenconsideredaformofselfentertainment
(usuallyinaschool/officesetting),multinationalcompetitionsandmeetingsare
sometimesheld.[1]Itisaformofcontactjuggling.Itcanalsobeclassifiedasa

wherethePenSpinningAssociationJapanisnowdedicatedtopromotingthe
aspiringartform.Whileitsoriginsremainunclear,penspinningisquicklygaininginternational
popularitythroughonlinevideosharingandforums.AccordingtoMasakiTsukada,chairmanofthe
Japanesepenspinners,penspinningnowhasdedicatedmovementsinSouthKoreaandtheUnited

Thereisnoinformationontheoriginsofpenspinning.Theearliestrecordofpenspinningcomesfroma
studentinpreWorldWarIIinJapan(AsahiShimbunJanuary31,2008,37thpage).Whilesomein
Asiancountriesdidpenspinninginthe1990s,thesewerebasictrickssuchastheThumbAround,
FingerPass,Charge,andSonic.Today,therearemorevariationsandtypesoftricks,forexamplethe
Shadow,theKoreanBackAround(Bak),theTwistedSonicBustorthePalmSpin.
Thenumberofpenspinningwebsitesandforumshaveincreasedsince2006,openingupmoreregional
boardsfromFrance,Germany,China,Taiwan,Japan,Korea,Vietnam,ThailandandIndonesia.
TournamentsareorganisedontheInternetandlivetournamentsareheldinChina,Japan,andKorea.

Spinnersuseavarietyofsystems,symbols,abbreviationsandshortformstohelpthemexpresshowthe
penisspun.

FingerSlotSystem
Forconveniencepenspinnershaveadoptedacommon
numberingoffingersandthespacesbetweenthem("Finger
Slots").Thefingersarenumberedsequentiallyfrom"1"the
indexfinger,to"4"pinky.Thethumbistheletter"T".Finger
slotsarerepresentedbycombininganytwoofthese.Forinstance
thespacebetweenthemiddleandringfingersis"23".Apenheld
betweenindexandpinkyisinslot"14".Sometimesthespace
betweenthethumbandindexfingersnearthepalmiscalled"TF"
(thumbflap)andtheslotofthetipsofthethumbattheindex
fingeriscalled"T1".Thepalmissometimesnotatedas"P".

FingerSlots

Notations
Anotationsystemconsistsofacombinationofabbreviationsandshortformsoftricksandtheir
directionslotsystemtodefinethedirectionandpositionofatrick.Notationsystemsrangefromformal
withhighdetailtoinformalwithalmostnodetail.Thefollowingsystemisoftenused.[4]
Modifier:Amodifieraddsadditionalaspectstothebasetrick.Modifiersmaynotneedtobeadded
dependingonwhattrickisperformed.Modifiersareoftenabbreviated(e.g.,InversetoInv.).
TrickName:Thisisthebasetrick.WhiletheTrickNamemaynotbeomitted,itcanbe
abbreviatedforcertaintricks(e.g.,ThumbAroundtoTA).
Direction:Thisisthedirectionofrotationofthependuringatrick.Ifthedirectionisomitted,itis
assumedtobe"Normal."Ifthedirectionis"Reverse,"itcanbeshortenedto"Rev.".
numberofspins:Thisisthetotalamountofrevolutionsofthepenthroughouttheentiretrick.If
omitted,itisassumedtobethedefaultamountfortheindividualtrickstated.
startingposition:Thisisthefingerslot,orotherpositiononthehand/body,ofthepenwhenthe

breakdowns.

InPenSpinningthereare4mainfundamentaltricksspinners
oftenlearnfirst.Theyareasfollows.

ThumbAround
TheThumbAroundNormal(previouslyknownas"360Degrees
Normal")isperformedbypushingapenusinganyfinger
(usuallythemiddlefinger)exceptthethumbtoinitiatethepento
spinaroundone'sthumbonetime,thencatchingitinbetweenthe
thumbandafinger.[7]Therearemultiplevariationsofthe
ThumbAround.

PenSpinning

Pass/FingerPass
ThePassNormalinvolvesrotatingapen0.5timesfromone
fingerslottoanother.WhenperformingaPassonthepalmside
ofhand,thepengoesdownward.WhenperformingaPassonthe
othersideofthehand,thepengoesupward.Asmall
combinationofPassesinvolvingthepenrotatingfullyaroundthe
hand,startingandendingatthe12slot,iscalledaFingerPass.[8]
TheFingerPasswasusedintheJamesBondfilmGoldenEyeby
BorisGrishenko,inavariationusingonlythreefingersinsteadof
theusualfour.

TheideabehindtheSonicistomovethepenfromonefingerpositiontoanotherfingerpositioninas
littletimeaspossible.IntheSonicNormal,apenisheldinafingerslotnotinvolvingthethumbandis
spuninaconiclikemotionbehindafinger(orfingers)toanotherfingerslotfurtherupthehand.The

TheChargeNormaldoesnotinvolvespinningthepenaroundanyfingersoranybodyparts,rather,the
penisspunconicallyinasinglefingerslot.[10]Intherighthand,thepenspinsclockwiseintheleft
hand,counterclockwise.Thistrickisoftenperformedbydrummersusingdrumsticksratherthanpens.

Advancedtricks
Inadditiontothe4fundamentaltricks,morehavebeeninvented
andusedsuccessfullyincombosbynumerouspeople.Almostall
advancedtricksareminiaturecombos,calledhybrids.Ahybrid
isapenmovementthatcanconsistofoneormorepartial
fundamentaltricks(e.g.theTwistedSonicNormalconsistsofa
Charge0.5followedbyaPassReverse).[11]Amorecomplex
hybridcanalsoinvolveanotherhybridwithinitself(e.g.the
Devil'sSonicNormalconsistsofaTwistedSonicNormal
followedbyaShadowNormal).Asmorehybridshavebeen
inventedovertime,individualnamesforeachonehavebecome
increasinglyuncommon.Thisisbecausebreakdownsofthe
hybridshowingthetricksoutofwhichitismadearepreferred
overauniquenameforthehybrid.

Infinity
Thepenshouldbeginbybeingheldinthewritingposition,nearthetipofapen.Awiperreverseis
performed,wherethepenpivotsfromthetopofthethumbandindexfingertothebottomofthethumb
andindexfinger.Apasstotheindex/middlefingersisthenperformed.Thepenpivotsfromthetopof
thesefingerstothebottom.Thepenisthenswungbackuptothewritingposition.Whenthepenisnot
passedtoadifferentfingerslot,thetrickiscalled"Figure8".Whenmorepassesareinvolved,thetrick
maybecalledothernamessuchas"DoubleInfinity".

Shadow
Thisisatrickwherethepalmisfacingdown.Thepenstartsatanyfingerslot(usually12)anddoes0.5
rotationsinthechargepositionbeforetravelinguptothetopofthehand.Thepenshouldrevolve0.5
timesontopofyourfingers.Asitnearstheendofthe0.5revolutionsontop,slowlyliftanyofyour
fingerstocatchthepen(usuallytheindexfingertocatchitinthe12slot).Attheend,afinal0.5
revolutionsofchargeshouldendthetrick.Doingatotalof1.5revolutions,andusuallythetrickis
followedbyanothertrick.Itisconsideredaveryhardtrickforbeginners.
InverseShadow
IftheShadowisperformedwiththepalmofthehandfacingdown,TheInverseShadowistheopposite
ofthat,WhichmakesithardertomasterthanthenormalShadow
