Feedback will offer suggestions for improvement.

Component 1 - Reporting

Virginia Gana artwork Happy is a visual art piece that has been created by
first sketching out outlines of various designs, then applying colour. The
abstract design is made up of a collection of lines of many contours,
miniature love hearts weaved throughout the design, swirls that takes the
observers eye all around the page like they are dancing to a song and
random circles of different sizes placed haphazardly in the art piece. The
colours used are bright and engaging and work extremely well together. The
black outline of the design is striking and gives the artwork a sense of depth.
The first attention grabbing colour is of pretty bright pink, accompanied by a
fierce orange that grabs you in and then the background of the spritely
yellow which ties all the colours together in harmony. As you take the time to
take in the picture as a whole you can get the impression that the art work is
more to generate a mood or a sense of feeling for the observer. As described
by (Dinham, 2014, p. 307) the overarching theme of visual art is to create
meaning- express feelings, to tell stories, to create sensory experiences..

Component 2 - Responding
Virginias visual art drawing is coloured by oil pastels. The yellow and orange
combination are from the warm side of the colour wheel and belong to the
tertiary colours. The colours are intense and vibrant creating energetic
feelings of delight, and cheer, giving an overall sense of happiness. The
small amount of pink that is randomly added to the picture gives a feminine
touch and also adds to the overall feeling of happiness.
The outline of black makes the shapes detectable. When first looking at the
artwork the use of lines, colours and shape add dimension to the drawing.
The love hearts and circles flow in and out of the larger shapes which
influence the viewers to gaze the whole picture. The focal point of the picture
is the swirls of different sizes that dominate the design and helps keep the
interest of the observer.
The art work is made up of distinctive outlines some lines have a thicker
outline than others. The patterns can be described as repetitive, the swirls
as they differ in size make up the most of the proportions of the art work.

The lines dominant with a dynamic flame shape outline which is extended on
by lines that swirl at the ends.
The design is asymmetrical producing an informal balance that is attention
attracting and vibrant. The lines are sometimes exaggerated to give the
picture a flamboyant style which makes the picture easy on the eye.
The art work appears to be representing the love of freedom and the
emotion of happiness because of the bright shades, and randomness of
shapes. However a contrast of this could be seen as a picture of confusion
and frustration where the swirls represent the tightness and dizziness of
trying to rid a build-up of anger or perhaps passion as represented by the
colour hues of orange, yellow and the dash of pink.

Component 3 Relating and Reflecting

Virginia artwork was eye catching, with its brightness of colours that blend
together creating a strong sense of happiness and vitality. I can connect with
the design of shapes as I see this piece with difference, it is stimulating and
challenging to interpret. I find myself that I to like to draw with a carefree
manner when I feel carefree and happy.
It would be easy to dismiss Virginias artwork as a hasty design or an
aesthetic picture that any person could create. However as the world is

made up of unique people, therefore there are many artists out there that
inspire people on a daily basis by using the same creative principles of
design as the art piece Happy.

Component 4 - Reasoning
The purpose of this art piece may have been to just create an abstract
colourful design. By being able to see the artworks stages from start to
finish I can see much more. The creativity used in placing shapes and line
add to the complexity of the picture. The shapes could be the symbolism of
feelings swirls for happy, flames for excitement and the hearts for love.
Mostly I tend not to look at art but this subject has given me a deeper
appreciation in seeing more than just the colourful drawing.
The artist when blogging about her art work commented that I decided that
I was going to draw whatever came to mind whilst listening to music. I used
colours that I was drawn too and let my mind do the rest of the

construction. This is an honest recount of where her inspiration came from

music and mood.
The overall artwork is made up by various features, line, pattern, shape,
balance and colour. All of these components alludes to the fun and vitality
going on within the drawing. Maybe the artist is also this in character, and
was using the drawing to express her emotions. Colour is bright and clear,
three distinct colours that would also be predominantly used for catching the
viewers eye, as explained by Morris (2013), Specific colours tend to stir
certain emotions in people Pink is looking for attention, it represents fun
and female. Yellow is the colour of command attention, shows confidence.
Lastly orange the fun and cool colour which is attention grabbing also.

Component 5 Reconstructing
By viewing and deconstructing this artwork by Virginia Gana, I have come to
the realisation that to appreciate art takes much more than just a quick
glance of either approval or disapproval of what you first see. As a preservice teacher this would be a skill I would try and teach my students to
have an open mind and see the possibilities of a meaning of artwork, as by
doing this would have them develop their own aesthetic abilities. (Bell,
2013), exerts that children have great imagination and learning through art

and learning about art, through aesthetic engagements and conversations

about artworks has the potential for enriching learning in comprehensive
ways.
Art is made up of many components that come together to reflect a
meaning, it is or can be the expression of a persons emotional journey, It
can be a way to let out frustration of perhaps what been happening their life
or on that particular day. To produce an art piece takes much more than
colour and outline. Art is very personal and people can construe many
meanings depending on how they feel on what they are observing.
As a pre-service teacher I am now extremely excited and can see the
endless possibilities in using art in a variety of subjects. . A specific area art
could make the most impact is when working with students with disabilities,
in particular a non-verbal students could communicate effectively by using
just a colour a certain colour could mean they are having a good day or bad
day etc. Art can be the words for children that do not have or cannot find the
rights words to express themselves for whatever reason. In classrooms
planning work in various forms of art extends childrens visual language and
gives them different platforms to express their needs (Dinham, 2014, p.
308)
