Length of Lesson: 20min will be conducted during Library center time
Goal
This activity will encourage children to develop their ability to make and share
their opinion with others. Children will be able to share their opinions in a
small group discussion.

Objective

Children will be able to recall and identify characters in the story.

Children will be able to answer where and what questions about the
story being read.

Children will be able to recall and answer simple questions about the
story.

Children will illustrate their favorite part of the story

Materials
Story books: "The Snowy Day", Ezra Jack Keats, "The Mitten", Jan Brett, and
"Sneezy the Snowman", Maureen Wright
Paper
Crayons
Markers

Introduction

Each story will be introduced by name.


"Come gather around the circle kids, we are going to be reading (book title,
author) today for story time. When we're done we are going to talk about it,
are you ready for that?" waits for response "Wonderful!" Reads the story
After the story is done
"Can you tell me what your favorite part of this story was?"
Teacher will select students who have raised their hand to respond to the
question. For those students who do not raise their hand the teacher will
encourage them to respond to it.

Lesson Development
This lesson is to be conducted by both direct and indirect instruction. Teacher
must speak clearly and in a way that makes each character distinct from the
other. Making sure that no child has to strain to see the book that is being
read. During the individual section of this lesson the teacher is to observe, and
when help is needed assist the students who require it.

Differentiation

This activity involves sitting in a circle group for approximately 15-30


minutes. There are children that have attention deficit problems, these
children may need redirection back to the group or in high deficit situations
student may be placed with an aide. Children who may be difficult of hearing
would be placed closer to the teacher; the teacher will speak in a slightly
louder tone, clearly.

Practice/ Checking for

This lesson will be assessed both individually and in a supervised manner.

Understanding
(Assessment)

Supervised Assessment: The first part of the lesson, which is reading the
stories, will be done directly by the teacher. Questions asked will be observed
and recorded in each students individual notes for the week. Children who
need redirection for attention and for questions asked will have that noted.
Individual Assessment: This Activity will also involve an art project at the end
of the Unit, this will be done with minimal supervision. The teacher will
observe how the children utilize the art materials to assess fine motor skills.

Closing
The importance of this lesson lays in the children's understanding of the story.
Giving them the opportunity to develop the ability to come to their own
conclusions about the story at hand. It also is designed to help gain group
communication skills. These stories are all winter or snow related.
