If you were buying a t-shirt would
knowing it was made in a sweatshop
affect your decision to buy it.
If you decide not to buy a shirt
made in a sweatshop how might that
effect the sweatshop workers.
Do you think this photograph

world.

Key terms
Ingenuity gap the gap between peoples need for new and innovative
solutions to
problems and the ability to supply those
solutions.
Gender gap the social economic and political differences that separate
men and
women.

Some Ripple
Effects of
Globalization
Pg. 326 - 327

Advantages of the Internet:

Ecommerce has added

greatly to the world
economy. Online
businesses such as ETrade are significant
contributors to
ecommerce

The internet is an important tool in the

process of globalization. People can
connect with each other from all over
the world. Common interest groups can
be formed to protest or support an issue
(ex. Green Peace). Information and news
are constantly being updated and
added, so people can stay aware of
current world events.
Ecommerce takes place 24 hours a day,
adding money flow at a quicker rate to
the worlds economy. As a result of this
the average hours a Canadian works in
a week grew from 44.6 hours to 46.3
hours.
Technology is constantly being improved
to stay competitive with technologies in
the rest of the world.

Nicholas and
Sayer

Disadvantages of the Internet:

New York Times writer Thomas
Friedman states, At its best,
the Internet can educate more
people faster than any other
media tool we ever had. At its
worst, it can make people
dumber faster than any other
media tool we ever had. The
Internet at its ugliest is an open
sewer: an electronic conduit for
untreated, unfiltered
information.
The internet links people to
atrocities such as terrorism,
poverty, human trafficking, and
environmental degradation.

The Ingenuity Gap

pg 328

The ingenuity gap is the gap between

peoples needs for new and innovative
solutions to problems and their ability to
supply those solutions.
People rely on scientists or entrepreneurs
to solve the problems faced by society.
The gap is dangerous to a society and
over time , the problems tend to become
more complex and urgent.

Factors that become hurdles that

prevent problem solving.
1) Market Failure- Market does not provide
opportunities for businesses to make money.
2) Shortage of capital- Financial and human
resources are not available to solve problems.
3) Science cannot operate- Scientific research
cannot be conducted for reasons like lack of
funding or the controversial nature of the topic.
4) Social conflict- in turmoil, groups take action
to protect their own interests rather than
interests of society as a whole.

How has global awareness

affected gender issues?
Gender gap-The social,
political, and economic
differences that
separate men and
women.

Steps have
been taken
to reduce
the gender
gap, such
as
guaranteein
g human
rights for
females,
increasing
access to
education
for girls,
and
improving
health care.

In 1984 the UN
set up the
Development
Fund for Women
to promote
gender equality.

Gender Issues and Communication

Technologies.
Many improvements in gender equality can be attributed to womens
organizations that use communication technologies that allows them
to share information, ideas and documents around the world.
In developing countries,
when groups try to use
technologies, they are
faced with social, cultural,
language, education, and
money barriers. Women
tend to have less access
to technology than men.
Programs have been
implicated to close the
communication gap for
women. Women of Uganda
Network set up a
computer training centre
for rural women.

One goal of groups that focus on

gender equality is to encourage
women to play a greater role in
politics.
The first women to sit in the House of
Commons was elected in 1921.
Even though women are participating
more in politics, no national
legislature included 50% women.

T.K & A.F

pg.331 (a)

Throughout Canadian history women have been

denied the same rights that men have in the
workplace.
Women have also been denied the opportunity to
advance in their careers. In 2006 only 5.4% of the
top earners at Canadas 500 top corporations were
women.
Overall, women remain largely excluded from the
key jobs that signal corporate power and influence,
despite compromising nearly 1/2 of the Canadian
labor force and more than 1/3 of all management
roles said Deborah Gillis, executive director of
Catalyst Canada.

UNIONS AND COLLECTIVE

BARGAINING

Unions are contributing

to rising manufacturing
costs and promoting
special interests-of their
members-over the interest
of consumers, corporations
and some governments

INTERNATIONAL
INITIATIVES

Pg 334-335
Nicki & Burdeen

International unions are

beginning to gear
campaigns toward
diminishing poverty and
insuring basic human
rights.
If a major difference
continues to exist then all
workers are vulnerable to
the forces of globalization

Labor Standards

Labor Standardsmeasures that

protect workers
and the
environment.

International labor
organization identifies four
fundamental principles
and rights at work:

Freedom from forced labor

Freedom form discrimination

in the work place

A ban on child labor

The right to organize and

bargain collectively

The Fair- Trade

Pg 336-337
Movement

Coffee is the
largest fair- trade
product.

Fair-Trade Principles and Practices

Fair Price- Producers are paid a guaranteed minimum price and
harvest credit.
Fair Working Conditions- Forced and child labor are prohibited.
Democratic Decision Making- Producers and workers decide how
to invest their revenues.
Community Development- Producers and workers are encouraged
to invest in community development projects.
Direct Trade- Producers trade directly with importers to reduce the
number of people who share profits.
Safe Environment Practices- Producers use environmentally
sustainable methods.

~ In todays globalizing world, there is a growing

gap between societies that have knowledge and
entrepreneurial attitudes and skills.

with information technologies.
~ New growth opportunities are predicted to take
place in the service sectors.
~ Elements that have changed the most in the
economy include the economic progress, key
economic drivers, life cycle products and
technologies, competitive situation, decision
making, organizational structures, valued skills

Social Clauses require countries to take

measures to stop the most extreme forms of
labor exploitation, such as forced labor, very
low wages, and child labor. Advocates of this
strategy view social clauses as a way of
establishing minimum labor standards on a
global scale.

Effective Governance
Includes
Respect for human rights
Efficient and effective institutions, such as courts,
that protect citizens
Police forces that do not use their powers for their
own benefit
Parliaments that reflect the goals and aspirations of
citizens of a country

Example of NGO that promotes effective

Governance: Amnesty International

Pg 339 ~ KB & AD

Stephon Marbury markets a

line of basketball shoes that
cost $15 a pair. He is aware
that lots of expensive brand
name shoes are made in
developing countries that
use cheap labor.

Foreign D ebt

can dram atically reduce the quality oflife in a country.

Foreign debt builds up when a country borrows

from other countries or international lending
agencies to fun projects or make up budget
shortfalls. Borrowed money has been used to
build lavish government buildings, to make the
country more competitive on a global scale or has
been wasted through corruption.

International Funding Agencies

World Bank and International Monetary

Fund require countries that borrow money
from them to make structural adjustments
to improve their ability to repay the loan.
As a result, many developing countries have
found that structural-adjustment programs
have reduced peoples quality of life.
High debt payments have undermined the
ability of many developing countries to
modernize.
In 2006, Canadas national debt stood at about
$481 billion, or about $16000 a person.

Indur Goklany Even though

human numbers have increased
during the millennium quality of life
has never been better. People are
better fed, healthier, they live
longer and there are better rights
for women. Work is less physically
demanding and the worker gets
more leisure time and a higher
wage.
Paul Hellyer Universal health care,
education and concern for the
environment is being cut back all
around the world. Unemployment
has been high. 350 million people
are employed while about one
billion people are unemployed or
underemployed.

Naomi Klein People are

shut out of schools,
hospitals, workplaces, their
own farms, homes and
communities. Privatization
and deregulation are
causing armies of locked-out
people whose services are
no longer needed and whose
lifestyles are written off as
backward and whose basic
needs go unmet. These
fences of social exclusion
can discard an industry and
write off an entire country.
