Legions Of War

Book 2
Chapter 15

Date 673232.67
Private Log, Section K operations.
We left Cacones with six colony ships crewed with families units and all the
needed members to settle a new world. While passing through the Harvest
system a request came in for a medical officer to care for some alien.
We quickly discovered this alien was a human child. He was in really bad
shape and after a few quick checks it was discovered this child was
unattended and a Host. This child had suffered a major neurological shock
and two assassins attempts. Den mother Daysee elected to remove the
child from the Kuil care and foster him.
The Host Center Command did an investigation of its own. While we are not
privy to the outcome HCC decided that since this child did not have any
living family, the accident that left him in this state to start with was
sufficient to mandate HCC intervention.
Our updated files include the information showing that this human child is
really seventeen years of age. Our own medical staff have reviewed both the
human provided medical files, and the young host personally. We discovered
that there has, in fact, been brain damage.
Host Silverwing-Arc was forced into a cloned body. It seems the humans
handling the process rushed, and didnt account for the fact that the twelve
year old body brain had not fully developed, and the re-imaging process
didnt fully take. Our medical staff agrees that what was lost had very little
impact on his intelligence. Mostly it affects his social skills and mannerisms.
With time the Host will recover the lost skills, and be ready to enter society
as an adult. But there has been other related issues. The Host, Marc, tends to
be quick tempered and acts without thinking of his actions. This combined
with his military training has worried a few of the other parents.
Section Chief Swinn came up with an acceptable outlet for Marc. By allowing
him access to the sims system, Marc has found a way to alleviate his anger
while not taking it out on the other pups.

Hours ago it had come to our attention that Marc had been removed from the
Host rosters. What does this mean? For us, we may have gained a valuable
new member in a few years. For Marc it will be a shock. Hosts cost a lot to
train and bio-engineer. However, I have the report on my desk that seems to
indicate that the AI known as Cora has been decommissioned. She has been
found at fault in the accident that regressed her Host.
Host Central Command has found that Marc has been damaged to an extent
that he can no longer perform his sworn duties. Marc will not be punished
with the removal of his AI. It was felt that this would do significant harm to
his fragile mind. HCC has assured us that Cora has been reprogrammed in
her duties, and that Marc will be an asset to us.
At the meeting, it was asked how he could be an asset. While Marc has
extensive training as a Legionnaire, it's not all about killing. He had been
heavily trained to survive in extreme conditions. A Survivalist can of course
be an asset. He also had been trained to lead under extreme conditions. His
killing skills also translate over to hunting. These are welcome skills that may
help keep the colonies alive.

Healer Dunn Aruion.
Official Medical records.

Silverwing- Arc, Marc.
Human: Male
Caucasian
Hair: Black
Eyes: Blue
Weight: 97lbs
Height: 58inches (4ft 8in)
Age: Reported 17, but physical age is 13.
Subject is a registered Host. Extensive wetware nodes are currently in good
health.
After reviewing both the HCC records and Earth Prime medical records, we
have come to the conclusion and recommendation that Marc is no longer
suited to be a productive Host. We also believe that the removal of his AI
would be more harmful. This host has become dependent on his AI for not
only comfort, but also in maintaining his health. While it was not intended,
the clone body has neurological damage to both the Amygdala system and
the medulla oblongata.

While the damage to his Amygdala system can be overcome with

reeducation and time, we believe that the damage to the medulla oblongata
has been overcome by the extensive wetware nodes. The removal of the AI
would shut down the nodes and effetely terminate the Host.

Dunn closed the files and looked out the window. It was a sunny day and
quite hot outside. The colonists had made landfall a month ago. Normally,
Healer Dunn would not have reviewed the medical records of Host
Silverwing-Arc. But this wasnt a normal problem. Not since the fire at the
school district the other day.
*****
The fire raged from a plasma conduit.
Evacuate! screamed the broadcast system throughout the school center.
Marc at first ran with his friends, away from the fires and heat. But, after
rounding a corner, Marc found that Dizzy wasnt with them any longer. Marc
turned around and watched as another building exploded in flames.
The first steps.
You dont know if she in there, Cora said as Marc stepped back towards the
fire.
But she could be.
The fire is far to intense for you to handle.
Marc broke out in a run. Thinking about would only delay his actions. The
wall of fire spread across the pathway and rose out of sight. Marc burst
through the flames and took a quick left, down and into a building's hallway.
Room after room Marc searched. Everything Marc saw Cora recorded and
tagged. Bodies, hot spots and even semi-safe spots. It was all recorded.
Marc entered the room where he'd last seen Dizzy. Just beyond the doorway,
Dizzy lay pinned to the floor by a beam. The beam wasnt heavy or large, but
it was wedged. Marc rushed over.
Wait a minute! I can get this off of you!
Dizzy looked at Marc, but after twenty minutes in the extreme heat she just
couldnt recognize him.

The nanite blades formed in Marc's left hand and sliced through the alloy
beam like a laser through warm butter. Marc let go of the beam and gave it a
small shove. The rest of the beam fell to the side. Marc lifted Dizzy up with a
grunt. Marc wasnt seventeen lifting a thirteen year old girl. He was thirteen,
on the small side, lifting up a girl who was five inches taller and a tad bit
more filled out. The fact was, Dizzy had twenty pounds on Marc.
By sheer will power Marc carried Dizzy from the room and down the hallway.
He carried her past others calling out for help. He carried her through the
room engulfed in flames. He carried her through the wall of flames.
He carried Dizzy over to a med team, and placed her on a gurney.
You okay? someone asked Marc.
Marc turned and passed right out.
While Marc was carrying Dizzy, Cora found a data link. She uploaded every
detail of what Marc saw into the firefighter's computer net.
Unknown to Marc, he ended up a hero. By saving Dizzy, twenty-two other
pups and a trapped firefighter had been saved by what he had seen.
Healer Dunn stood up and walked out of his office. The hospital was a prefab
building and was the first building assembled upon landing. It stood six
stories tall, and was set up for three thousand beds. Since landing they'd had
the average injuries pass through, plus one long term care patient.
Dunn took an elevator to the third floor and entered the pediatric intensive
care unit or PICU. Then he took the first right into a private room. This
patient was on full life support. Both of his legs had been amputated, many
organs had failed, or were failing, and most of his skin was covered in second
and third degree burns.
Sitting by his bed was the pup he saved.
Hello, Dizzy. Has he awakened at all?
No.
Healer Dunn walked over to a monitor, He just needs to hold on a few more
days.
