Formal Lesson Plan

Topic: Number and operations in base ten unit, topic subtraction

Purpose: Middle lesson to practice the mastery of base ten, double digit subtraction
and working with partners.
Pre objective- Students are ready for this lesson when they understand single digit
subtraction, place value, how to use manipulatives, and have been slightly
introduced to double digit subtraction.
Objective: Students will be able to individually solve 2 digit subtraction problems
using base ten manipulatives with an accuracy of seven out of ten problems.
Blooms:execution
Standard: use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform
multi digit arithmetic 3.NBT.A.2
Assessment: Students are paired into partners. Each partner is given two foam dice.
The first die represents the tens place the second represents the ones place (If they
role a 6 and 4 that would make 64, a 3 and 8 makes 38). Each student will roll their
dice at the same time, they will then state their number, and they will then use the
larger of the two to subtract the smaller (64-38). To solve this problem they will
draw the numbers as base ten manipulatives and solve.
Differentiation: larger dice for visually impaired. Problems written at individual level
if set partners in advance. Partner with students across room so students get
chance to move around, also allow them to stand as they play.
Language Demand: Students must be familiar with manipulative terms such as tiny
cube(1) , rod (10), flat (100) , and cube (1000) they will need these to display their
picture/answers.
Process skills: Communicating (working with partner) and interpreting data
(converting from numeral answer to base ten manipulative representation)
Ancillary parts: materials=foam dice two for each pair, poster paper, and colored
pencils. This lesson is designed for third grade mathematics for students ages eight
to nine for a class divided into pairs of two. This lesson will take about forty minutes
from recap, to game directions, to playing time, discussion, and clean up.
Preparation of the room: the classroom should be organized into tables, or pods of
two to four desks, so that students can work easily with a partner while still having
room to write. Students backs should not be faced to the board so that they can

clearly see the model chart and steps displayed. Teacher will have box of foam
cubes, poster paper, and colored pencils accessible on his/her desk so distribution
does not take up time.
Setting the learning stage: So what have we been working hard on in math? Yes
base ten subtraction. Today we are going to use our handy dandy manipulatives to
play a double digit subtraction game but first we have to do some work.
Procedure: 1. Review base ten double digit subtraction that was previously
discussed by watching video from LearnZillion
https://learnzillion.com/lessons/2534-subtract-numbers-within-100-using-base-tenblocks
2. Ask students to take out manipulatives
3. Work on practice problems as a class, having students come up to
smartboard to
show work. Ask why they did what they did, how did they get there, does
everyone agree?
4. Explain game instructions and expectations for working with a partner.
Each partner will toss two die making two digit numbers, the group will
subtract the smaller number from the larger, they will then display their
answer by drawing it as base ten manipulatives on poster paper. Students
must be mindful of rules to being a good work buddy; fair, listen, respectful,
encouraging, and friendly
5. Assign partners so that no one is left out. Assign by shirt color, birthday
month or numbers. If partnering by skill level try to find partners that can
challenge on another.
6. Pass out materials
7. Kidwatch as students work, help where needed
8. Warn children of a minute left, cleanup material and rearrange desks
Closure: Thank you for cleaning up quickly and respectfully. I saw some
great work going on. Girls and boys does anyone want to share what they
learned or noticed today from this game? Thumbs up if you thought this was
good practice, or thumbs down if you did not think it was helpful.
Extension: The lesson is closed with discussion, the room is clean, and
students have had time to move around and are now ready to move on to the
next task. Because class played a game teacher can extend this lesson into
fairness, students can write in their journals about a time they were fair or
someone was unfair to them.
