Computers
When you start talking about lots of bytes, you get into
prefixes like Kilo, Mega and Giga. In decimal systems, kilo
stands for 1,000, but in the binary system, a kilo is 1024 (2
to the 10th power). Technically, a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, but
it is often used loosely as a synonym for 1000. For example,
a computer that has 256K memory can store approximately
256,000 bytes.

Conversions
To convert bytes to kilobytes, divide the bytes by
1000.
To convert kilobytes to megabytes, divide the
kilobytes by 1000.
To convert megabytes to kilobytes, multiply the
megabytes by 1000.

Platters
Platters
A platter is a round
magnetic plate that
constitutes part of a hard
disk. Hard disks typically
contain up to a dozen
platters. Most platters
require two read/write heads, one for each side of
the platter. When the platters are not spinning,
the heads rub along the surface of the platters
until sufficient speed is gained for them to lift
off and float on a cushion of air.
