Major Competency Area: L Pediatrics
Competency: L-1 Knowledge, Assessment, and Care of Pediatric Client/Family Subcategory: L-1-5 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to identify suspicion and/ or signs of physical, sexual, and mental abuse of child, and report and document as per agency policy. One significant learning experience in this course was learning about child abuse and neglect. If there is ever suspicion or signs of child abuse and neglect, the nurses first priority is to make sure the child is safely removed from the situation. I have learned that child abuse and neglect can have a negative impact on the growth and development of a child. It is critical that the nurse completes a head-to-toe assessment of all systems on the child and accurately document with photographs and diagrams. It is important that the nurse objectively reports their findings and not their opinions. In addition, the nurse should build a trusting relationship with the child, so the child knows they are safe and free from further abuse. I have learned that the practical nurse is a mandatory reporter, which means that the nurse must report suspected child abuse even though confidentiality of the client may be breached. It is important to learn the protocols required by your agency in regards to reporting child abuse and neglect. I have learned that it is imperative that the nurse documents are accurate, specific and factual notes rather than interpretations, because the court later on in the investigation can potentially subpoena the childs medical records. Proficiency rating: Fair Reading through Pillitteri, various articles, and research online helped me understand the in good faith immunity, which protects the health care provider for reporting suspicion of abuse with children. Unfortunately I have not had the chance to practice care in the pediatrics area, therefore I have not been able to observe and apply learned theory in regards to reporting child abuse.
I will apply this learning to pediatric patients by thoroughly
performing head-to-toe assessments, observing interaction between child and the parent/caregiver, and keying in on the

being taken care of in efforts to provide a safe, holistic environment and promote healthy physiologically development of the child.
