ART
Taken by Mrs MacDonald.
HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Health - Basic skills and concepts will be taught. Self worth, Anti-Bullying, the Virtues and Values
programs and Anti-Drug programs will be emphasized along with Growth and Development sessions
later in the year. Parents should have been informed by letter before the Growth and Development
sessions occur. Emotional health and the teaching of resilience will be introduced through a new
program this year.
Taken by Mrs Casey
P.E - Skills will be refined and a variety of sports played throughout the year. Friday sport sessions
will continue as in previous years. SEPEP will be the basis of class PE lessons. SEPEP sessions involve
learning game skills and working in small teams with student coaches, umpires and captains. A child
SEPEP Board oversees the operations. Skills, sportsmanship and rules are emphasized. This is a
fantastic way to implement responsibility and group work/cooperation into another facet of school
life.
SCIENCE
The strands in Science are Inquiry Skills, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Understanding.
The students will be exposed to a number of hands on investigations that will incorporate these
strands. Students work in groups to investigate a given science topic by testing theories and creating
experiments.
Year 6 Science will be taken by Mrs King and Year 7 Science will be taken by Miss Martino.
LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE)
French will be taught for 60 minutes each week, taken by Mrs. Anna Lissienko.
HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY
Students will take part in a number of various individual and group activities to develop their
understanding of this terms theme. During the week, two to three sessions will be held incorporating
various learning areas including a library/technology session in the resource centre to allow students
class time for further research. Learning how to divide a task between team members and effectively
investigate a topic is the emphasis within this subject. The theme/assignment for S&E runs for an
entire Term and encompasses a number of skills research, note taking, reading, designing, creating,
computer skills, presenting and listening & speaking.

LIBRARY AND COMPUTER/ TECHNOLOGY

the class teachers to fully complement our themes (based on S&E aspects) for
total
integration across the curriculum. Our classroom computers, IWB and iPads will be used constantly by
small groups as a valuable learning tool across the curriculum areas.

E-mail and the Internet will be used for research. Children will create web pages, use power points to
present some of their work and competently use technology to complement their work. Our school
intranet is a fantastic tool for students to display their work to the whole school and source valuable
internet sites chosen by staff to enhance their learning.
Mobile Phones must be TURNED OFF at the school gate and handed in to the teacher for safe keeping
during the school day and collected when the bell goes. Any phones used inappropriately at school
will be confiscated and must be collected by a parent/guardian.
HOMEWORK
Approximately 20- 30 minutes of homework should be done 4-5 nights a week. This will be recorded in
a homework diary as a dual entry. All homework and due dates are always written on our homework
board.
Overdue homework not accompanied by a note will be completed at recess in the students own time.
Continual overdue work will require us to contact the childs parents. If a child is unable to do a piece
of homework due to a lack of understanding they are encouraged to see the teacher before school for
clarification.
If a child is having trouble with a piece of homework, they should not be forced to sit and work at it
for a long period of time. Parents should simply sign and say they have tried.
Most homework is finishing off work- editing and checking work and taking it to an excellent final
product or gathering extra research material for set topics. For this reason a child can never say, I
have no homework tonight.
The homework diary may be used as a communication tool between home and school so please feel
free to write in your childs diary. It should be checked and signed each week by a teacher and
parent- more often if needed.
PARENT HELP
Occasionally parents may be asked to help during class time or on excursions. Our parents are always
welcome! Of course talking to your child about their work, especially research activities, is an
enormous help.
SIGNING STUDENTS IN AND OUT
It is extremely important that any student, who needs to leave our school during the day, is signed out
through the front office. Parents are not to collect students from class or the playground unless they
have authorisation from the office. Teachers will not let students leave their classroom unless they
receive this written notification this includes students leaving to attend PEAC sessions.

ADMINISTRATION
The electronic attendance roll is a legal document. If a child is absent, a notation is made on the
roll. An absence must be supported in writing by the parent/guardian telephoning or faxing the
school on the day of the absence or sending a note explaining the absence immediately on the
return to school of the child. Parents can also inform classroom teachers of absences via email.
Weekly newsletters will no longer be sent home with the child. You will need to access this by the
Como Primary School website.
http://comoprimaryschool.webvault.ws/
Any permission slips or special event notes must be signed by the parent/guardian. Money
collected for fares/entrances/excursions is recorded in the Education Departments official Class
Money Book.
CATERING FOR ALL CHILDREN
Children will be catered for at all levels. Programs with open-ended activities will allow each child
to develop at their potential. There may be the possibility of the school psychologist being utilised
to aid children who are struggling in one or more areas. Likewise if there is a need we will meet
with the child and parent/s to devise an Individual Educational Program (I.E.P) to attempt to help
overcome a particular academic, social or behavioural problem. P.E.A.C will again be offered to a
few children. All children will be encouraged to give 100% at all times, to seek help from peers and
teachers if they are having difficulty in understanding any area of work.
STANDARDS: SCHOOL UNIFORM, SELF-ESTEEM AND EXPECTATIONS
Year 6/7 students are models to the whole school and are expected to set excellent examples in
their studies and behaviour. The students are encouraged to strive for personal excellence but also
perform well as a member of a team which lifts an individuals self esteem and purpose.
School uniform is expected each day so that the children see themselves as active and keen
participants in the Schools quest for developing productive and responsible citizens. No hats
should be worn in the classroom.

EQUIPMENT
It is important that children have all items listed on the 2014 Booklist.
Each morning they should check that they have the equipment needed for the day. Continual missing
equipment will result in a note to parents, as we prefer the children not to borrow from others. No
liquid paper allowed. All books and equipment should be named and maintained in good order.
In Room 4, students will be asked to use exercise books (provided by the school) and display files
(not binders) for specific learning areas. The following is required:
1x Maths
1x Punctuation & Grammar
1x English
1x S&E
1x Science
A library bag is required as well as an old shirt to be used as an art shirt to protect clothing during
such lessons. We encourage children to bring water bottles into the classroom. They must only
contain water and be sealed to prevent spillage.
TIMES FOR APPOINTMENTS
Should you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to arrange an appointment via your
childs diary, by phone or emailrachel.martino@education.wa.edu.au
terri.youd@education.wa.edu.au

We are sure that by keeping communication lines between teacher, parents and children open we

year.
