“Had I Been a Child”, Children’s Songbook, page 80-81 (third verse)
“I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus,” Children’s Songbook, page 78-79 (second verse)

Opening song and prayer:

Lesson:
“I Believe That Jesus Will Come Again” with Ten Virgins Story and Visuals: Using the summary,
recount to your family the parable of the Ten Virgins. Each of the oil drops represents one of the ways
that President Spencer W Kimball has counseled as something we can do to prepare for the Second
Coming of Jesus Christ. Insert the oil drops into the oil lamp as you talk about each one.

Game:
Preparing for Jesus to Come Game: Tell your family that this game will remind them of some of the
things they can do to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Show how the game describes good
things we can do to follow Jesus. These things lead toward the area labeled “Preparing for Jesus to
Come.” Point out that the game also shows some wrong things we might do. These things lead toward
the area labeled “Not Preparing for Jesus to Come.”

Give each player a game piece (coins, beads, or even scraps of paper will serve just fine as long as each
one is different).
RULES
*The object of the game is to get from the arrow marked “START” to the area labeled “Preparing for
Jesus to Come.”
*Take turns.
*On your turn, roll the die and move your marker the number of spaces indicated on the die. (NOTE: if
you do not have a die in the house, then write the numbers 1-6 on small slips of paper and place in a bowl
for them to draw on their turn)
*As you land on a square, you will read aloud what is written on the square. Tell something you can do
to follow this teaching, or explain why it is important to do the thing described on the square. If you land
on a square that describes a wrong thing, explain what you should do instead of the bad thing.
*The arrow on each square indicates which direction to go on your NEXT turn.

NOTE: When a child lands on a square that points away from “Preparing for Jesus to Come,” help the
children understand that when we do wrong things we are not following Jesus’ teachings, but we can
always change direction by doing what is right the next time.

Play the game until everyone has made it to “Preparing for Jesus to Come”.

I Believe That Jesus Will Come Again
(including the parable of the Ten Virgins)
by Susan L Warner in the September 1995 “Friend” magazine
based on Matthew 25:1-13
(NOTE: if your kids are curious as to what exactly a virgin is, you can explain that it is an unmarried woman. That should be
enough information for most children.)
******************************************************************************************************************************
When Jesus died and was resurrected, He promised that He would come again. Have you ever wondered what
that would be like? Jesus did not tell us when He would come, but the scriptures tell us that it will be a glorious
event. He will be our King and Ruler. It will be a heavenly, happy time for us if we are prepared to meet Him.
Because Jesus wanted us to know how important it is to be prepared, He told us a parable or story. It is called
the parable of the Ten Virgins and is recorded in the New Testament.

There were ten young women, or virgins, who were invited to a wedding supper. They had to wait for the bride
groom to let them in, but none of them knew when he would come to open the door.

The young women brought oil-burning lamps to give light so that they could see. (Show the lamp) Five of
them were wise and not only filled their lamps with oil but also brought extra oil so that their lamps would burn
for a long time (Point out the extra oil container next to the lamp). The other five young women were
foolish and did not bring enough oil.

Before the bridegroom finally came, the oil in all the lamps had burned away. The five wise women put their
extra oil in their lamps and lit them. The five foolish women had to leave to buy more oil. By the time they
returned, the bridegroom had opened the door, let the wise young women in, and closed the door again. So the
five foolish young women could not go in to the wedding with the bridegroom.

(Show picture of his Second Coming) Jesus is like the bridegroom. We do not know when He will come
again. But if we prepare like the five wise women in the parable, we will be ready and happy to meet Him when
He comes.

Application: How can we prepare for the Savior’s coming? President Kimball taught, “In our lives the oil
of preparedness is accumulated drop by drop in righteous living. (Add the oil drops to the slit in the jug of
extra oil one by one as you talk about each one) Attendance at sacrament meetings adds oil to our lamps,
drop by drop over the years. Fasting, family prayer, … control of bodily appetites, preaching the gospel,
studying the scriptures—each act of dedication and obedience is a drop added to our store. Deeds of kindness,
payment of offerings and tithes, chaste thoughts and actions, marriage in the covenant for eternity—these, too,
contribute importantly to the oil with which we can at midnight refuel our exhausted lamps.” (Faith Precedes
the Miracle, p. 256.)

Conclude by pointing out that if we are prepared, we will be happy to see the Savior. He wants everyone to
live with him again, but only those who follow his teachings and choose the right will be able to do so. Jesus
helped his disciples learn what they had to do to live with him again, and he has also given us teachings to help
us be prepared when he comes again.

Testify that Jesus Christ will come to the earth again, although not even our prophet knows exactly when.
Express your desire that as a family, that you will be able to prepared for when that day comes.
