My family and I have had a crazy and wonderful holiday season. We

started the month of December by adding two awesome members to our
family. Skyler is a 13yearold, 7th grade boy and his sister; Hannah is a
15yearold sophomore. Skyler is into basketball everything, hilarious
and loves playing with Sonya and Stella. Hannah is extremely self
motivated, straight A student and wise beyond her years.
Life has transitioned a lot from taking care of our two small girls to
taking care of two active and social teenagers. We are treading into so
many untouched waters; meeting friends parents for sleepovers, being
chauffeurs multiple times during the day, and doubling our grocery bill
(who knew a teenage boy could drink so much milk?). The kids have all
warmed up to each other really quick and its clear that we are (all 6 of
us!!) meant to be a family. It was truly the best gift I received this season!

I hope that you have all had a happy and healthy holiday season and
continue to have a great new year!

Big Sister Program

We will be bringing back the Big Sister program this year and are looking
for current members who are willing to participate. The Big Sister will be
paired with a new member and help them connect with other moms,
events and activities within MOMS Club of Eugene, OR. Currently the
weekly playgroups do a great job of getting new members
connected, but we thought we'd bring the program back and see if there
is interest this year. If you are a newer member and would like to pair up
with someone or current member willing to be a Big Sister, please let Tia
Merwin know and she will pair you up. You can contact her in person or
via
email
at

Moment On Mom Spotlight: Carole Sterry

This month's Moment on a Mom (and Grandmother) Spotlight is on
Carole Sterry. Carole grew up in Wayside, New Jersey and met her
husband at Monmouth College in New Jersey. They later spent 13 years
living off the grid in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, raising their two boys on
20 acres without electricity. They had propane for hot water, a fridge
and stove and used a gravity fed spring for water, which also allowed
for an indoor toilet. Their beautiful redwood home had no locks on the
doors and the closest neighbor was half a mile away. The house was
down a nine mile unpaved logging road and twenty miles from
Brookings, Oregon.
In 1985, they moved to Eugene for the quality
education in the public schools and so Carole could pursue a masters
degree in Education at the University of Oregon. Her eldest son Sky, was
starting high school, and her second son, Quince, was starting middle
school.
Carole didn't want them driving the long drive to their
wilderness retreat and felt they needed to graduate from a larger high

school.
In 2010, Carole's grandson Kade was born and Carole started watching
him nine hours a day, four days a week. In 2011, she joined MOMS Club
to attend playdates for Kade and says it as been a lifesaver. She has
made great friendships with moms from the 2010 playgroup and thinks
she would have been too isolated without MOMS Club.
Carole has several hobbies, including sewing, kitting, calligraphy,
reading and cooking. She loves to read and listen to audio books. When
pressed, she says "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is
her favorite book and her favorite audio book is "The Invention of
Wings." She loves documentaries; her favorite is "Babies."
Carole was an elementary school teacher for 15 years, a language arts
curriculum specialist for two years, an elementary school principal for 13
years and a university instructor for six years! She loved teaching and
being a principal but loves retirement even more!
Her favorite thing about being a mother and grandmother is the
immeasurable love that she gives and receives and the opportunity to
help shape the developing character and intellect of another being. She
says nothing can be as satisfying. That was part of her motivation to
teach young children and train teachers how to teach.
Her favorite thing to do in Eugene is to attend chamber music concerts at
Beall Hall, watch the Eugene Celebration Parade and bike on the path
along the Willamette River with her husband Rick. She also loves to
spend time with Kade, playing, walking, reading. Carole's favorite exotic
travel was to Italy and the Greek Islands but her favorite local destination
is the Oregon Coast.

Club Highlights from December

Did you Know ???

About our Helping Hands Program?
Part of the support we have in MOMS Club of Eugene is helping each
other during times of upheaval and stress. This is not just limited to
having a baby, things like moving or illness in the family also warrant a
need for this program. Our Helping Hands program provides moms with
assistance, usually giving
several meals in a time of need. However, this program can provide more
than just meals. We can arrange assistance with childcare, running
errands, even a phone tree! We want all of our members to benefit from
this program in a time of need and we are more than willing to
customize an assistance schedule that works well for each situation.
Please let us know if a circumstance should arise in your life and you feel
this program would help you! Our Helping Hands Coordinator is Kami
Hendrix and she can be reached at (541) 5135132 or
esotericgrl@gmail.com.
