ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS DC MOTORS
1.

A 220-V separately excited DC motor has an armature resistance of 0.32 and a

field resistance of 110 . At no load, the armature current is 6A and the speed is
1800 rpm. Assume that the flux does not vary with load. Calculate:
(i) speed of the motor when the motor is running at full load and the armature
current is 60A.
(ii) speed regulation of the motor.

2.

A 240-V DC series motor has an armature resistance of 0.42 and a series field
resistance of 0.18 . The motor runs at 500 rpm when the current drawn by the
motor is 36A. If the load on the motor now changes such that the current reduces
to 21A, what will be new speed at which the motor will now operate?

3.

A separately exited dc motor has the following name-plate rating: 230V, 460 rpm,
100 A. The motor armature resistance Ra = 0.11. The motor drives its rated
torque load which is independent of speed (i.e. it remains constant). The speed of
the motor is varied using armature voltage control method. If the speed is reduced
to 380 rpm, calculate the required armature voltage.

4.

A 220-V DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.2 and is drawing an

armature current of 50A. Calculate the power developed in the armature.

5.

A 200-V DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.1 and a field resistance
of 100. When running at 1100 rpm with no load connected to the shaft, the
motor draws 4A current from the DC power supply. Find the back emf generated
and the rotational losses at no load.

6.

A separately excited DC motor has an armature resistance of 1.3. When operating

at 220V, and delivering an output power of 3 hp, the motor runs at 950 rpm and
draws 12.2A from the DC power supply. The field current remains constant at all
load conditions.
(i) Find the developed power, developed torque, the power lost in the armature
winding, and the rotational losses.
(ii) Assuming that the rotational power loss is proportional to speed, find the noload speed of the motor.

7.

A DC shunt motor has the following name-plate rating: 200V, 5hp, 1500 rpm. It
draws 23.3A from the DC power supply. If the current drawn by the field winding
is 1.5A and armature resistance is 0.4, find the input power, the power supplied
to the field circuit, the power lost in the armature winding, rotational losses, and
the efficiency.
