General Committee Position Descriptions



What is TeamMED?
TeamMED is a Monash University student-run club that aims to encourage medical
students across all year levels to become involved in medical volunteer initiatives
around the world. We currently run three overseas volunteer trips each year to Tonga,
Nepal and Uganda and are involved in sourcing medical equipment, supplies and raising
funds for these disadvantaged communities. Additionally, we aim to organize initiatives
students can be involved in locally, along with global outreach information, education
and training.

Our vision at TeamMED is to provide students with opportunities to experience hands-
on medicine in unique and challenging environments, as well as making a difference to
the communities that we support.

Who is on the team?
In addition to the Executive Committee, TeamMED positions include:

Position Descriptions:

General Committee members:
- Work in special interest teams to coordinate Team:MED events throughout the year
- Promote Team:MED events and trips within their respective year level through
lecture theatre, Moodle, blackboard, Facebook, and other mediums
- Act as point of call for their year level
- Work with the Resource Coordinator to obtain medical equipment and supplies
from hospitals and other organisations
- Work with the trip coordinators and trip participants in fundraising and other trip
participation
- Attend a minimum of 80% of monthly meetings
o Please note that if attendance requirements are not met, we will advertise for a
new representative. Certification of your role will not be provided.

Tonga Trip Coordinator:



TeamMEDs Tonga trip was established in 2011 and has since developed into a
successful annual initiative. In past years, students have undertaken a placement in
June/July at the Prince Wellington Ngu Hospital in Neiafu. Last year through a
combination of sponsorship and fundraising activities, the Tonga team managed to raise
$7000 to support the hospital and the local community. A very successful program has
been run in the past encompassing not only clinical experience in the hospital but an
emphasis on community initiatives such as health promotion education, activities with
school groups and free community health check-ups.

The Tonga Trip Coordinator will oversee almost all aspects of the trip, including liaising
with the contact in Tonga, establishing a day-to-day program, overseeing the application
process and promoting the trip.

1. Logistics of the trip

Includes:

Establishing dates for the trip
Liaising with our contact person in Tonga to organise
accommodation/transport, etc.

2. Program of the trip

A day-to-day program must be created, encompassing a variety of activities such
as health promotion and visits to community health providers.

3. Promoting the trip
The coordinator will be responsible for liaising with the TeamMED Executive and
General Committees to promote this trip. This will include providing details for the
Tonga Trip information session.

3. Overseeing application process

The Trip Coordinator will create the application form, and review applications in
conjunction with the Executive Committee. The Trip Coordinator will further be
involved in conducting interviews with shortlisted applicants and ultimately
selecting the team.

4. Providing preparation and support for trip participants

This year there will be a focus on outreach training for trip participants to
prepare them for the demands of medical outreach in a developing community.
The trip coordinator will be the primary support for trip participants before,
during and after the trip.



Nepal Trip Coordinator:



TeamMEDs Nepal trip was established in 2011, with the first group of students
undertaking a placement in December 2011 in the rural villages of Bigu and Dolangsa,
Nepal. The students set up a health camp in the village, seeing over 300 patients
throughout the 10-day trip. In conjunction with the TeamMED general committee, over
$5,500 was raised to support the local community. Since this inaugural trip, the
initiative has continued to grow and expand to other regions of the country. The
foundations of a strong and mutually beneficial relationship have been formed with
volunteers in Nepal, TeamMED and the communities we support.

Uganda Trip Coordinator:



2013 saw the introduction of the first TeamMED Uganda trip. The group of six students
travelled to the rural village of Lubanda and worked with the newly established Suubi
centre to provide free medical testing to the locals. This included HIV, malaria, other
infectious diseases and diabetes testing. The trip allowed students to experience African
culture, landscape and wildlife.

In 2014, the group carried out another very successful trip to Uganda and the Suubi
Centre, including dental health as an objective of the trip. The Uganda trip continues to
be one of our most successful and effective!

The Nepal Uganda Trip Coordinator will oversee almost all aspects of the trip, including
liaising with the contact person in Uganda, establishing a day-to-day program,
overseeing the application process and promoting the trip.

Resource Coordinator:

TeamMED is involved in organising medical volunteer initiatives around the world. As
part of these trips, we source medical equipment, medication and supplies to help
support these disadvantaged communities.

The role of the Resource Coordinator will include:
1. Establishing links with hospitals and contact persons for the sourcing and
retrieval of medical equipment and supplies
2. Coordinating the storage of equipment
3. Liaising with Team:MED committee members and coordinating General
Committee members who will assist with equipment retrieval and storage.
4. Educating the wider student body about sourcing medical donations and
equipment promoting Team:MEDs role in this and providing support to students
wishing to be involved.



IT and Marketing Officer:

The role of the IT and Marketing Officer is to uphold and enhance the image of
TeamMED and to foster our cause through promotional and publicity activities. A major
project for this year will be the further development of our website (powered by
SquareSpace). Further responsibilities will include the enhancement of our social media
outreach and aiding in advertisement of our events and activities. This may additionally
include creating promotional materials (e.g posters) for our various events and we may
also need assistance with photography coverage in certain cases.

Evaluations Officer:

A new role for 2015! The role of the Evaluations Officer will be to build upon the work
from 2014 in the efforts to devise and implement an effective evaluation process
following our overseas trips. The purpose of this role is to ensure that both the students
and the community members we meet are benefiting from the experience and our
actions are doing no harm. This will be a very exciting role with a huge scope to improve
our trips and benefit a large number of students and people around the world.
