2014 Snapping Shoals Bright Ideas Grant Application

Mary Caroline Smith

Newton County Theme School
(Please answer the following questions thoroughly. You are not limited to the space on the
form, but you may type your answers into the form and then print it out. Attach the cover
sheet to the application and submit to Dr. Kathy Garber, Grants Coordinator by 5:00,
Monday, 9/15/14.
1. Write a BROAD statement which describes what is to be accomplished by the project. This
statement should be no more than three or four sentences. (What is your goal and expected
project outcomes?)
My students' lives are greatly affected by technology and the media. YouTube, Twitter,
Facebook, TV, movies, and online games impact much of their daily life, and they are constantly
sharing all of the things that they are watching or learning through these media sources.
However, my students lack the technological skills that they need to conduct research, type
reports, and create presentations. The 4 Chromebooks will give my students the opportunity to
conduct meaningful research and then demonstrate their knowledge with a PowerPoint
presentation, Prezi, essay, video, etc.

2. What specific, measurable instructional objectives can be verified upon completion of the
project? (What will the learner outcomes be?) Objectives must be consistent with the
existing system goals and school improvement. List specific Georgia Performance Standards
or Core Curriculum Standards addressed by the project. Please write out the standard, not
just its number, so reviewers do not have to search to determine which standards you are
addressing. Label your objectives using alphabetical letters.
Students will conduct a research project and present their findings using their choice of media.
Standards addressed are:
a. ELACC5RI7: Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating
the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently
b. ELACC5RI9: Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write
or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
c. ELACC5W2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas
and information clearly.
d. ELACC5W7: Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build
knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

e. ELACC5W8: Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant

information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes
and finished work, and provide a list of sources.
f. ELACC5W9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis,
reflection, and research.
g. ELACC5SL4: Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically
and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or
themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.

3. What method(s) will you use to accomplish each objective above? Note: Each objective will
have a method. Please include the use of the materials you request in your budget as
part of your method. (Ex. We will use disposable cameras to photograph subject matter
for our essays.) Cite below each instructional strategy (method) that you expect to use
during this project. The methods must correlate with the objectives. Label each using
alphabetical letters: (a, b, c).
Students will use Chrome books to conduct research about the Civil War. Students will gather
their information and present it to the class through a multimedia presentation. Students will use
search engines to practice their research skills. Students will work independently. Here are a few
websites students can use but are not limited to:
http://www.civilwar.org/education/students/
http://www.historynet.com/civil-war
http://www.studentguide.org/great-civil-war-resources-for-k-12-students/
http://www.pbs.org/civilwar/classroom/annotated_list.html
http://www.radford.edu/~sbisset/civilwar.htm
4. How will you determine or measure the progress or successful completion of the project?
(How will you evaluate the project? How will you determine if you met your goal?)
A successful project will show students demonstrating research skills appropriate for 5 th graders.
Students will be able to conduct research independently and create a presentation of their
findings.
5. Describe how your project idea is transferable. (How could it be useful to other educators in
their teaching or how could it benefit the student during the next school year?)
Research skills are necessary for students to become college and career ready. All students need
to be able to successfully conduct research and be able to present their findings. Having Chrome
books available to do this research and presentation will benefit my current and future students.
6. When will your project begin?

September 2014

End?

October 2014
