Standards for Word Processed Written Work

This paper, along with the Anne of Green Gables report, is another example of how your
typed papers should be formatted. Please look at this paper if you have any questions about how
all of your typed papers should look. Make sure to hold on to this paper! Perhaps keeping it in
your red Language Arts folder would be a good idea. If you happen to unfortunately misplace
this paper, then be resourceful!
The heading is located in the upper left-hand corner. The heading is the students name
(first and last), due date, and the class name and period number. The heading is single spaced.
See the heading above for a model.
The title should be slightly larger (size 14) and centered. The font should be the same
font as the rest of the paper. There should be no more than one space between the heading and
the title. There should be no more than one space between the title and the written piece. Titles
should not be underlined, italicized, or in quotation marks, unless the title chosen by the student
is also the title of a book, article, magazine, etc. See the title size and spacing above for a model.
The written piece should be double-spaced like you see in this paper. All computers give
writers the option to double space. Each paragraph should be indented by pressing tab once.
See the beginning of each paragraph as a model. There should be no extra returns between
paragraphs. See the extra return space below as a non-example.

The font should be a basic font (nothing elaborate). Times New Roman is preferred. The
font should be no larger than size 12. This paper is written in Times New Roman size 12. The
font cannot be all capitals. The page margins (the sides) should be normal - 1 indent from the

top, bottom, left, and right (the margins should not be narrow or wide). If you run out of black
ink, I will accept blue.
Be sure to spell and grammar check the piece with the computer and with your own
brain! It is often a good idea to have someone else (like a parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or
older sibling) read your paper to you before the final submission. This way you and your reader
might catch mistakes. Spell and grammar check does not catch everything!
To improve the piece stylistically, vary sentence structure and vocabulary. Add poetic
tools (metaphor, simile, hyperbole, etc.) Add adjectives and adverbs. Replace boring verbs with
stronger verbs.
Staple all pages together in the upper left corner BEFORE YOU COME TO CLASS. The
final paper should be on top, followed by the rough drafts and any planning. The rubric should
be on the bottom.
Please use this paper as a reference for formatting your papers. Formatting papers
correctly is an important skill to master. If you do not follow these basic instructions, then you
will lose points in the written requirement section of the rubric. KISS - Keep It Simple, Students!
