Event 5 Routine Workshop Operations
ASSESSMENT TOOL DESCRIPTION AND INSTRUCTIONS TO ASSESSOR
TASK/S Overview
Students undertake a range of routine workshop operations to produce 2 small, metal, manufactured
items. Both items consist of parts manufactured using different techniques plus both require assembly.
Students are to undertake planning steps to detail the manufacture and assembly process including
the development of safe work method statements and job sequence planning.

Theory Tasks to be
completed

Complete the Safe Work Method Statement for both projects

Complete the Quality Control Plan for both projects
Complete a Gantt chart for each project, working within the
expected delivery time
Complete the project review questions on completion of both
projects

Practical Tasks to be
completed

Produce an Engineers bevel

Produce a scratch gauge

WHS requirements

Context of and
specific
resources for
assessment

Teachers are to provide a comprehensive WHS induction to the

Engineering learning space, drawing links to the practices in a construction
workplace. Students will be expected to consistently apply WHS
requirements, policies and procedures at school and the workplace.
The RTO endorsed the use of in school safety testing such to ensure that
students are correctly trained in the use of engineering specific tools and
equipment.

The Metal & Engineering Course (comprising of the MEM10105 Certificate I in

Engineering and the Stage 6 NSW Metal & Engineering Industry Curriculum
Framework Course) is designed to develop a basic understanding of the role of the
student in the Engineering Sector. The course and its associate assessments are
designed to develop greater understanding and appreciation for the requirements
of employees in the industry and introduce students to Engineering processes and
skills in basic manufacturing. The course is not designed to develop trade level
proficiency in skills and knowledge.
These competencies are to be assessed using standard and authorised work
practices, safety requirements and environmental constraints. Assessment of
essential underpinning knowledge will usually be conducted in an engineering
work/industry context. Assessment is to comply with relevant regulatory or
Australian standards requirements.
Resource implications for assessment include:
an induction procedure and requirement
realistic tasks or simulated tasks covering the mandatory task
requirements
relevant specifications and work instructions
tools and equipment appropriate to activity
support materials appropriate to activity

RTO Assessment Task

workplace instructions relating to safe work practices and addressing

hazards and emergencies
material safety data sheets
research resources, including industry related systems information.

Reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities must be made to assessment

processes where required. This could include access to modified equipment and
other physical resources, and the provision of appropriate assessment support.
Preparation
prior to
assessment:

Items required for assessment:

In ALL practical exercises where PPE is required as per the Safe Work Method
Statement and/or teacher instruction. Students are required to bring their PPE from
work:
You are also required to supply and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
and follow the relevant Work Method Statements during the practical components
of this unit of competency. The following approved Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) must be worn when required:
Closed in shoes in accordance with relevant school policy
Work coat/apron
Eye protection
Heat resistant protective clothing
Ear protection
It is important to remember that the laws protecting the Work Health and Safety of
people at work apply to students. These laws emphasize the need to take
reasonable steps to eliminate or control risk at work. You are encouraged to help in
eliminating hazards by reporting anything that you think may be a risk to you or
other people to your teacher.
