Book Club Reflection
Book Club reflection prompts:
What: your summary of this reading, its central message and connection to our course and
your experience in the discussion
The book, Flourish, written by Martin Seligman is about his revision of the authentic happiness
theory which is based on positive emotions, engagement, and meaning. In Seligmans new
theory, the well-being theory, he builds his theory on positive emotions, accomplishment,
positive relationships, meaning, and engagement. While some of the pillars for his foundation
draw from the authentic happiness, Seligman adds more and also states that each of these pillars
may contribute to well-being, but do not define well-being.
So What: what makes this a valuable discussion given the focus of our class. Which part of
this reading and research are the most significant for you after this discussion, given your
stage of career exploration and self-reflection.
This book prompts for great discussion within our class, because of its all-encompassing
approach to the quality of life in the work world. During our class discussion, we broke it up into
five segments: Wellbeing, Creating Happiness, Responding to the Negative, Learning and
Applying Well-Being Principles, Grit, Principles to Flourish and Mental Strength, Resolving Past
Events and Research on Optimism, and
Wellbeing and Economic Realities. While I think all topics are very important, the ones that
resided most with me were the grit, principles to flourish, and mental strength as well as
resolving past events and research on optimism. As a senior about to enter the working world, I
will be on the bottom of the totem pole which means I will need to focus on what principles will
help me flourish as well as mental strength in order to succeed at my job. I also think younger
people tend to dwell on past events and focus in on the negative and not the positive events.
Therefore, I think that people my age need to work on being more optimistic.
Now what: how can you use the content of this discussion in your career exploration or
understanding of yourself in this process?
I think that the last topic on wellbeing and economic realities is something that wont affect me
so much right now at my age. However, I believe that in future years, this topic is something that
most people face in the chase of their American dream. Having a good understanding of the
definition of wealth is important, because people sometimes tend to misplace their priorities in
thoughts of achieving the wrong definition of wealth.
