STRUCTURE: BRIDGES
Why were bridges invented?
Bridges were invented to be able to cross easily through a
river lake or anything that contains a large body of water.
Instead of using boats bridges make it easier to cross
over instead of having to go on a long trip with a boat.
What did they use before bridges?
Before bridges they used boats because it was the only
method to be able to cross a large body of water. They
used boats because they were the only things that could
float in water.
What were the earliest types of bridges?
The earliest types of bridges were the bridges made out
of wood and holed by a suspension.

BENAVIDES - 2

For day 2 I started to research about the advantages and

disadvantages for different types of bridges.
Advantage and Disadvantage (beam, suspension, arch,
road)
Beam Bridge
Advantage-it has a pile deck and pile base.
Disadvantage it is straight there forward it has a higher
probability that it will fall in a long time.
Suspension bridge
Advantage-it has the suspension wires which help it
maintain its figure or shape
Disadvantage-the heavy structure could make it fall
down.
Arch bridge
Advantage-its triangle structure can maintain it still for a
long time.
Disadvantage-Its color might distract people from going
to visit it.
Road Bridge
Advantage- it has a superstructure and also a
substructure pier and a substructure.

BENAVIDES - 3

Disadvantage-it has a very low shape.

For day 3 research about 4 of the most famous bridges in

different styles.
Famous arch bridge
The Sydney harbor bridge is a famous arch bridge that is
134 meters high and its width is 49 meters its length is
1,149 meters it is located at Sydney, Australia.

Famous suspension bridge

The golden gate bridge is a very famous suspension
bridge it is located at San Francisco and its height is
746(227m) its length is 8,980m.

BENAVIDES - 4

Famous Beam Bridge

The Albert memorial bridge is a beam bridge built in
Canada it is 256 meters long and its width is 22 meters.

Famous road bridge

The isis river bridge is road bridge in australia it was
made in august the 12 in 2011. An intrestin g fact that it
was one of the best bridges in that place.
For day 4 I researched about interesting facts
for the bridges above.
4 interesting facts about the bridges above
The Sydney harbor bridge- an interesting fact it took
272,000 liters of paint for an initial 3 coats of Harbor
Bridge. Something else it took 1,400 men 8 years to build
the bridge and 4.2 million dollars.

BENAVIDES - 5

The golden gate bridge-the military wanted the golden

gate bridge to be painted in stripes. This bridge is the top
suicide place.
The Albert memorial bridge-it is for the memory for the
Prince Albert. Also it took 10 years to finish.
The Isis river bridge-it is 50 years old.it is made out of
concreate.

For day 5 I researched about 3 broken bridges.

3 disinterest bridges
The Tay Bridge- is a railroad bridge located it in Dundee in
the country of Scotland. The way that this bridge
collapsed was in a storm on December 28, 1879 it
collapsed when a train when over it just wasnt ready for
that pressure. Its structure was fine until it meat with a
storm it was not ready to take that risk so it wasnt ready.
Since the bridge was ready yet because of the hard wind
it collapsed.

BENAVIDES - 6

Tomaca Narrows Bridge-is a suspension bridge located at

Tacoma, WA. The way that it collapsed was a mazing
seeing it back and forward during the storm. It was
suspension bridge that was made out of wood but not
really that was poorly build. It wobbled from one way to
another until the suspensions ripped apart making the
bridge fall down.

The Ehuharlee bridge-it is a wood bridge that is located in

Georgia it collapsed in a storm just like the above. But
unlike the above this had a pretty good support but once
the storm hit it made the support fall.

An arch bridge

BENAVIDES - 7

I decided I was going to build an arch bridge identical to

this. This bridge has a good structure and I think if build
right it will wit stand a lot of weight.an arch because of its
triangular structure can support a lot of mas. The sides
make the arch bridge more resistant.an arch bridge in my
opinion and others agree that it is very difficult for it to
fall if it is well constructed.
