INTRODUCTION
Thefollowingjobaidisdesignedtobenefitaspecificfamilyinanemergencysituation
thatcanoftenleadtopanicanearthquake.Althoughmostpeoplelivinginearthquakeprone
areasareawareofthetasksnecessaryduringandafterthedisaster,itisnaturaltopanicand
possiblyforgetthosetasks.Thiscanleadtoanalreadydangeroussituationtobecomeevenmore
so.Aclearjobaidaddressingcommonscenarioswillhelppeoplecompletenecessarytasksto
staysafe.
Ourjobaidtargetsaspecificfamilycomprisedoftwoparents(oneworkingandone
stayathome),twomiddleschoolagedchildren,andtwodogs.Inthejobaid,itisassumedthat
theroleofparent1wouldbethatofthestayathomeparent.Thejobaidisdesignedasa
twosidedtrifoldtobekeptinmultipleplaceswithinthehome,ineachchildsbackpack,inthe
earthquakekit,andpossiblyineachparentsvehicle.Thisway,intheeventofanearthquake,
thejobaidwillbeeasilyaccessible.

PROCESSOFCREATINGTHEJOBAID
Discussion:GoogleHangout
Tofacilitatethediscussionandcollaborate,theOtterGlobetrottersutilizedavarietyof
Googleapplications.Thegroupconductedweeklymeetings,sharedvariousdocumentsforeach
stepoftheprocess.Eachteammembermadenoteswhileaddingideasintheirdesignatedtext
color,aswellascommentingontheothersinput.Communicatingideasanddecidingona
particularneedwasdeterminedfairlyquickly.Asagroupwefiguredoutallofthejobaids
details.Attimesthegroupcollaborationwaschallengingduetoourgeographiclocations,but
afterthegroupputourheadstogether,thegroupgeneratedagreatproduct.Allofourmembers
hadgreatattributes,suggestions,knowledge,experience,andtalentsthattheycontributedtothe
designandcontentofthejobaid.Ourvariedbackgroundsbroughtaboutawellrounded
approachtoourproject.

toconveydifferentlooks.Googledocumentsallowedustokeeparecordofasynchronous
collaborationandprogress.

DespiteallthegreatqualitiesofGoogledrawing,theprogramdidnothaveallofthe
toolstoproducewhatweimaginedasagroup.Ourgroupismorecomfortablehaving

synchronouscollaborationwithamoreprofessionallook,soweresearchedotheronline
products.Asateam,wedownloadedatrialversionoftheLucidPressTeamandwewereableto
createaverygoodroughdrafttogether.Whileeditingtheproject,wehadtheopportunityto
communicatewitheachotherthroughachatboxorthroughGoogleHangout.LucidPressalso
hadtheadvantageofbeinglinkedtoGoogleDrive,allowingustokeepthedraftinourgroups
folder.

ThefinaldraftofthejobaidwasdesignedinAdobeIllustratorandthensavedasapdf

LESSONSLEARNED
Groupmeetings
Aswegotacoupleofweeksintotheproject,wediscoveredthatitwashelpfultohavea
meetingagendacreatedaheadoftimetofollow.Thishelpedusmakesurewecoveredall
questions/concernsteammembershadandeliminatednumerousemailsthroughouttherestofthe
weektryingtoaddressforgottenissues.Tocreatetheagenda,duringtheweekleadinguptothe
teammeeting,allteammembersaddedanytopicstheyfeltnecessaryintoasharedgoogledoc.
Design
WeusedGoogleDocstoworkcollaborativelyduringeachstepoftheprocess.
Collaborationworkedwellhavingacurrentdocumenteachweektoaddtoandshareideasat
everyonesconvenience.Thisallowedustocollaboratethroughouttheweekwithouthavingto
arrangeourschedulestohavemultiplemeetingstodiscusseveryaspect.UsingGoogleHangouts
foraweeklymeetingworkedwellingettingeveryonetogethertodiscussideas,aswellaswork
ontheprojecttogether.Forexample,whencreatingthetrifoldlayout,wewereabletotryout
variousprogramsfordesigningthejobaid.WefoundthatGoogleDrawingworkedwelltoset
upthebasicdesignbutwashardtoworkwithasadoublesided(twopage)design.Wefound
LucidPressworkedwellasadifferentcollaborativeprogramandwewereabletocreateamuch
bettermockdesignlayout.Finally,weusedtheLucidPresslayouttocreatethejobaidusedin
testingandthefinalproductwithAdobeIllustrator,aprofessionalgraphicdesignprogram.We
learnedthatwecouldhaveskippedusinggoogledrawingsforthelayoutandgonestraightto
LucidPress(hadweknownaboutitsooner)asacollaborativeprogram,savingsomesteps.

Throughresearchingcollaborationtools,wewereabletofindmanyinterestingappsthatconnect
togoogledriveandhaveasimilarconcept.Thiscanbeveryusefulinfutureprojectswhere
collaborationandteamworkisessential.
Research
SincethetargetfamilyforthisjobaidistobelocatedinSanDiego,wesoughtouttofind
established,inplaceproceduresandphonenumbers.Usingavarietyofwebsites(below),we
wereabletomodifythejobaidtomeetthespecificneedsofthisparticularfamily.

Testing
Themostpracticalandreadilyavailabletesterswerepulledfromfamilyandfriendsof
ourgroup.Utilizinghelpfromfamilymembersandfriendswhofitthecriteriaorcamecloseto
thecriteria,weaskedforhelpinevaluatingthejobaidanditsusability.Throughourtesters,we
gainedvaluablefeedbackonthejobaid.Onceallofthecommentsandsuggestionsfromour
testerswerereceived,weutilizedGoogleDocstocompilethisinformationfortestresults.Asa
resultofthefeedback,wewereabletomakeneededadjustmentstothedesignandcontentofthe
jobaid,creatingourfinalproduct.
Detailsoftestingandrevisions:
Thespecificfamilyhadnoproblemfollowingthejobaid,theysaiditwaseasyto
understand.Thekidsreallylikedthedogimages,butsincetheydonothaveamailboxaway
fromthehouse,thataspectconfusedthem.Itwasexplainedthatitwasahypotheticalsincewe

usedmainlythespecificfamilysinformation,butanotherfamilysmailboxlocation.Theonly
additionwasthatParent2mentionedtoaddpersonalmedicationstothesupplieslist.Other
familymembers,suchasasisterinlaw,motherinlawandniecereviewedthejobaid.Theysaid
itwaseasytofollowandcouldbeeasilyadaptedfortheirfamilywithjustafewminoredits(i.e.
meetinglocations).Ingeneral,everyonereallylikedthelayoutandthoughthavingapersonal
