Aims of the session:

To give you an overview of the


structure of Reading in FS2
To give you an insight into how
Reading is taught in FS2 at JPS
To provide strategies for parents
to support Home Learning

Structure of Reading in FS2


Reading
Groups
- Word
Time
- Ditties
- Reading
Book

Based on assessments, children are now split into


smaller groups for Reading

We must make sure that the 5Ps are


followed:

Participation
Positive Teaching
Pace
Purpose
Passion

A typical phonics session within class:

Sounds - How to help your child if they


bring home a Super Sound Book:
Say and recognise the sounds
Write a line of the sound
Make words using the sounds at
the back of the book
Try to write the words you make
Read the sentence, using your
pointing finger to point to each
word
Find pictures to match the words
you make

Word Time - How to help your child if


they bring home Word Time Home Learning:

Practise sounding out and blending


the words
Use sounds and the pictures to help read
the matching sentences, using pointing
finger to point to each word
Practise reading the sentences using
different voices, e.g. happy, witch, loud,
sad, quiet etc.
Encourage children to decode unfamiliar
words using their sounds

Ditties - How to help your child if they


bring home a Ditty:

Read the speed sounds


Read the green words
Read the red words
Set the scene a red hot sun
Read the Ditty
Discuss the answers to the
questions
Hold a sentence

Re-read the book using fluency and expression
model how to do this

How to help your child if they bring


home an Oxford Reading Tree book:
Look at the front cover discuss the title and
describe the picture
Read the introduction/blurb to the child
Start reading the book
Encourage Fred Talk when children are not
sure
Ask questions after reading each page
Talk about the book - what was your favourite
part? Why?
Re-read the book using fluency and expression
model how to do this
