Audience: 1st grade

Since I plan to use simple vocabulary that all relate to the same topic, the sea, the ideal
audience are first-graders who are learning new vocabulary. Images of marine life (fish,
plants,) in vivid colors all appeal to a slightly younger audience.
Subject matter: A baby fish gets swimming lessons by his dad. His dad teaches him many
things: such as other fish, other plants, different sea creatures, places in the sea, and how
to avoid predators. Both daddy fish and baby fish are surprised when they see snorkeling
humans who say hello to them. Then, they were chased by a shark, but escaped when
they join a school of fleeing fish. This concludes their lesson.
Plan for Illustration: Drawings colored by crayons and color pencils that take up most of
the page.
Plan for the writing and production of the book:
I plan to assemble the book by hand, using A4 sheets of paper.
The book will be a poem detailing the adventures of Jared the baby fish and Harris the
daddy fish, with rhyme scheme XAXA, possibly ABAB. An average line in the poem is
about 10 syllables.
The book will be between 38-40 pages (2 paragraphs/page so a possible number of 60-66
stanzas), including the cover, back cover, and title page.
