CONTEMPORARY ABORIGINAL SPIRITUALITY CLOZE

PASSAGE
Aboriginal Spirituality is determined by the Dreaming. This is due to the
___________connection between Aboriginal people and the land itself. The ___________ is
made up of three main components, being Kinship, ceremonial life and obligations to
the land and people.
____________refers to the relationship between Aboriginal people and the land they live
on. This is determined by __________ ties as well and guides individuals by teaching laws
to govern day to day life.
Ceremonial life is made up of four parts, being art, stories, rituals and totems. Art tells
stories of the past and allows the Dreaming to be passed on down to generations from __________ to younger children. Stories are shared by Elders to create a sense of
__________ and educate people on topics of how the universe came to be. Rituals come
in many forms, such as dance, body paintings, smoking ceremonies etc. These have the
role awakening the __________ spirits and bringing them to the present day as they are
________________. Totems are objects based animal, plant or sacred sites which each
individual is given. It is then the individuals responsibility to protect their totem as a
part of their _________ growth.
Obligations to land and people entails the protection of the land due to the fact that the
land is fundamental to the Dreaming and so must be protected in order to preserve
__________ spirituality. Rituals such as balance rites are ___________ to ensure this occurs
as balance rites cleanse the environment of bad spirits and restores the natural world.
Land is a recurring theme in the Dreaming. This is the reason for land rights, which
were originally established in 1975 by the ___________ government. Across the course of
history, many laws and legislation have been put into place as Australia recognizes the
significance of the land for Aboriginal people. This is because of the _______________
which occurred during the late 1800's till the late 1900's. The protection policy (1869
1901) was put into place first and hoped to protect Aboriginals from themselves
through isolation and removal from families. The ______________ policy (19011950) was
an idea of making Aboriginals 'civilized' by merging them into the white Australia with
the intention to 'breed them out'. Integration (19641972) had a similar mind set, with
the introduction of the 'White Australia Policy'. All people removed from their families at
these times are regarded as the _________ generation.
To counteract this, many forms of law were put into place to promote selfdetermination of Aboriginal people. In 1992, the Mabo movement won which allowed
for the removal of _______ _________ and the right to claim land as their own due to its
sacred implications. The Wik decision of 1996, implemented coexistence of Native
Rights and also assisted with the _____________ of land and its significance to Aboriginal
people by the wider public. This is all regarded as _________ title (1993) which is a form
of land title that recognises the unique ties some Aboriginal groups have to land.
Australian law recognises that native title exists where Aboriginal people have
maintained a traditional ________________to their land and waters.
