Coal Mining

From the 18th to the 21st century

By: Zach wheldon & Tyler Blaine

18th century coal mining

coal mining goes back
thousands of years and
continues to be important
to this day. Large scale coal
mining developed during
the industrial revolution,
which provided the main
source of primary energy
for the industry from the
18th century to the 1950s.

Tools used
Many tools were used to in the 18th
century, some of the main tools
were Shovels, pick axes, pitch forks
and donkeys and horses to pull
trailers.

What was the coal used for?

Coal in the 18th century

was used mainly for
transportation in
industrial areas. Coal was
often used because of
its low cost.

Britain.

Who worked in the mines

There were many people who worked in
the mine including young children,
women and men. Many of them were
very poor so thats why they chose to
work in the mines.

Health conditions
There were many dangers for the
miners, there was also many
different health conditions miners
could get. Miners would end up
having lung problems from all the
coal fumes and dust that they would
breath in daily. Some would end up
with lung cancer or even die.

What would happen if one was injured or killed?

Back in the 18th century if a

worker got injured while
working in the mine they
would give the worker a small
check and let him go, because
the worker was no good to
them anymore. If a worker
died there wasnt much that
would happen because of the
numbers of workers they
could employ it didnt mean
much for them to lose one
worker.

Coal mining in the 21st century

Coal mining has developed

greatly over the years
instead of digging by hand
and carts they use
machinery allowing them to
work easier and faster.

Colombia coal mining

Some of the world's largest coal
reserves are located in South America.
Colombia has one of the biggest open
pit coal mining operations in the world.
The mine produces 24.9 million tons of
coal a year. Cerrejn contributed about
half of Colombia's coal exports that
year.

Company name
The biggest coal mine
location in Columbia is
named Cerrejon located
in the basin of the
Ranchera River.

Company workers
All the workers that are
employed work only for the
company and belong to the
association. They are taught
how to mine by the company
so they know how their
workers are trained. A union
for workers is a place that
workers can have an opinion
and have a voice.

Dangers miners face

Some dangers miners
could face would be
Gas explosions in coal
mines from a build-up
of methane gas,
Vehicle or Equipment
Collisions or Crushing,
Chemical leakage and
fires.

Vancouver Island Raven mine

What is this and where will this take

place? Who is the
company
The Vancouver Island
Raven mine is a
underground mine which
is located in Fanny Bay. In
early 2013 Sierra Club BC
and Sierra Comox Valley
celebrated a major
milestone in a fight
against Compliance
Energy Corporation.

Why would someone from this area want to work at this proposed
mine?
From the Comox Valley to Port
Alberni, local citizens are standing
up against coal mining on
Vancouver Island. If this coal is
exported and burned, it would
release over 60 million tons of CO2
into the atmosphere. The Raven
Coal Mine will have significant
local environmental impacts. Very
few people from the area want this
mine almost everyone is against it
but have no choice.

Are other companys affected by the mine?

Local businesses in the
Comox area are all being
affected by the mine,
even the town itself is
being affected by the
environmental impact.
The company has been
created to investigate
the possibility of
developing the Raven
Underground Coal
Project on Vancouver
Island.
