To Whom It May Concern:
Icis my great pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Ms. Lindsay Oblert.
Ms. Ohlert was my student teacher during the fall of 2009 at Phalen Lake Elementary in
Saint Paul, MN. Phalen Lake Elementary is a Core Knowledge Hmong Studies magnet.
The pre-school to sixth grade student population numbers roughly 625, of which over
75% are English Language Learners, and over 90% qualify for free-and-reduced-lunch
status. The student body is diverse and includes Hmong, African-American, Karen,
Latino, and Vietnamese students
Ms, Ohlert came to Phalen Lake Elementary as an experienced, licensed, and effective
teacher, and she simply built upon her already sound instructing skills. Ms. Ohlert
worked with two second grade classrooms in the areas of Readers’ and Writers
Workshops, second grade math and phonies intervention groups, and a sixth grade math
intervention group. Her rapport and classroom management skills were exceptional and
the students found her lessons to be engaging and instructive. Her Spanish bilingualism
was useful in teaching newly-arrived, and learning disabled Spanish-speakers.
mathematical concepts and procedures. Ms. Ohlert’s Readers’ Workshop mini-lessons,
guided reading groups, oral language and phonics lessons were based upon the Mondo
reading curriculum, She was able to modify the generic lessons to meet the particular and
diverse needs of the learners, while remaining true to the focuses, scope, and sequences
of the curriculum. Ms. Ohlert also taught Writers’ Workshop procedural mini-lessons.
‘with competence and flair, and conferred effectively with students in the revision and
editing portion of the writing process. Under Ms. Ohlert’s tutelage of the phonics
intervention group, students made on average, impressive thirty point gains. In addition,
Ms. Ohlert collaborated well with both the ELL staff and classroom teachers at Phalen
Lake Elementary.
Ms. Ohlert demonstrated professionalism, caring, enthusiasm and very high competence
in her student teaching tenure, She would be a weleome addition and leader in any
educational community. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like further
positive information at 651-293-8935, extension 1504.
