Unit 10:
Protein
Synthesis

SWBAT:
Construct the concept of
the function of the cell
membrane is to control
what enters and exits the
cell.
Apply the function of a cell
membrane.
Investigate and explain
cellular processes
including homeostasis,
energy conversions,
transport of molecules,
and synthesis of new
molecules.
ENGAGE:
Show them a short video clip
on Lion Kings circle of life.
Discussion: start with a
question is balance important
to life?

SWBAT:
Identify the cell
membrane maintains
homeostasis by moving
substances (solutes or
solvents) across the
membrane.
Understand diffusion is
the movement of a
molecule from a high
concentration to a low
concentration.

SWBAT:
Apply the
concept of
osmosis is the
movement of
water across a
membrane from
a high water
potential (low
solute) to low
water potential
(high solute).

ENGAGE:
Ask students to explain
why membrane
proteins might be
needed to help with
transport of materials
across the cell
membrane. The cell
membrane is semipermeable. Small
molecules such as
water and oxygen can
pass through. Larger
molecules and charged
ions cannot pass
directly through, but
the cell still needs
them to be able to
move in and out of the
cell. The membrane
proteins provide a

Ask students How

is the rate of
diffusion affected
by the
concentration
gradient?
The higher the
concentration
gradient (the
higher difference
in solute
concentration
between two
areas) the higher
the rate of
diffusion.

means for this to occur.
Begin the class with a
discussion. (5
minutes)
Explain to students
that today they will
make observation
on the movement of
materials across a
semipermeable
membrane.
Reiterate that
substances need to
move across the
cell membrane in
order to maintain
homeostasis in the
cell.
Ask the students
which types of
substances need to
be moved. Oxygen,
nutrients, carbon
dioxide, etc.
Ask the students
what form the
substances are in
solid, liquid, or gas?
All states of matter
need to be moved
across the
membrane.
EXPLORE:
Project PPPhenolphthalein.
Describe that
phenolphthalein is an

EXPLAIN:
Discussion: each group share
their observations and the
properties of membrane
Students should tell you
that the model was
flexible, everything could
not pass through it, there
could be a hole formed to
allow certain things to
pass through, but they
had to fit through the hole
ELABORATE:
We represented protein
channels by using the
string to make a hole in
the bubble membrane.

bright pink in the
presence of a strong
basic solution.
Complete L-Diffusion of
Gases through a
Semipermeable
Membrane as a demo.
(or have students
complete the activity at
the lab tables if you
prefer.) (10 minutes)
EXPLAIN:
Explain what each of
the substances are and
how an indicator
solution works.
Have students record
their observations.
Ask them how the
indicator changed color
when none of the
liquids have mixed?
The gas particles are
passing through the
semi-permeable
membrane into the test
tube.
Ask them to explain if
the particles are
moving from where
there is a high
concentration of
particles to a low
concentration of
particles or vice versa.

Project PPOsmosis and
Tonicity.
EXPLAIN:

Discuss the
results of each
scenario as a
class. Why did
one egg gain
mass? Why did
one egg shrivel
and lose mass?
Let the students
come up with the
reason for what
happened. (5
minutes)

Teach PPOsmosis and

Tonicity slides 122 as students
take notes in

And how do they know?

They should be able to
tell you it is moving
from where there is a
high concentration to
low concentration.
They can tell this
because if there was a
high concentration in
the test tube already,
the indicator solution
would have already
been pink.
From this explanation,
introduce the students
to the term diffusion.
Have them write their
own definition of the
term in their IN. (5
