College of Education
LESSON PLAN FORMAT
Name: Carly Stockert
Grade Level: 1st Grade Special Education Classroom
School: Madison Elementary School
Date: 11/17/14
Time: 12:50-1:20
Reflection from prior lesson: I have seen Ernesto working with the cooperating teacher in the classroom and I have
observed a few things while I have been watching him. I have noticed that he works really well in the classroom
when there is one on one work with the teacher. He struggles with his basic math skills and especially counting
backwards higher than 11s and 12s but does well with number recognition.
Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:
Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects
or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (such as 18 = 10 +
8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
or nine ones.
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps),
and acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Lesson Objectives: Ernesto is going to be able to more easily subtract with his 11s and 12s, be able to count
backwards from 12 and count by 5s.
Materials Needed: Number board, worksheet that helps him with his 5s, the white board, practice number problems,
number template activity, and polar bear game.
Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

Does not respond promptly

May forget easily

Fights with playmates

Plays in pairs or in groups

Is interested in magic, puzzles, collecting, and exchanging

Is concerned about being good

Is easier to discipline, sensitive to praise

Complains and sulks

Looks to his/her teacher

A. The Lesson
1.

Introduction (3 minutes)
Today we are going to be working with your subtraction numbers and then at the end we are going to
play a subtraction game.
You have been working with your 11s and 12s with your subtraction so that is what we are going to
focus on today.
We are also going to be reviewing a little bit with your counting by 5s.

2. Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional methodologies)

We are going to start off by doing a quick review of his counting by 5s by starting to go to the number board
while he points out to the 5s and counts them out loud. We are then going do a work sheet that has a few fill in
the blank spots of where he needs to fill in which number comes next in order. We are then going to go to the
board and practice counting backwards from 12 to 0. I am then going to do a few practice problems up on the

board (11 4 = 12 2 = 11 5 = 12 6 = 11 7 = 12 7 = 11 2 = 12 1 =) for him to complete before

we get work with the number template activity working with his 10s, 11s and 12s in subtraction. After we are
finished with the four sections of that, we are going to move to a game called Dont Crack the Ice. This is where
there are going to be cut outs of polar bears with subtraction problems on them and we will take turns grabbing
one of the bears until they are gone or one of us gets a bear with the word crack on it and then we have to put
all of our polar bears back in the middle and start again.
3. Closure (3 minutes)
We are going to go over his 5s again and have him go back to the board and count back from 12 again to make
sure that he understands it and works with it.
B. Assessments Used
He is going to be orally assessed in the end for validation that he knows his 5s and how to count backwards from
12. Throughout the lesson he is going to be filling out worksheets and writing up on the board to show that he
understands what we are working with.
C. Differentiated Instruction
I am going to be giving him 3 different ways to work with his subtraction skills throughout this lesson by having
him write answers to problems up on the board, mental math with the polar bear game and with the number
template, which gives him validation right away that he got the answer right or wrong.
D. Resources
The classroom teacher gave me ideas from the classroom to make my own ideas of from what she had shown me
and what Ernesto needs to be working on.
