Winter 2015 ENGG 317 Assignment 2

Due 18:00 Friday 13 Feb - drop-in boxes located on the 3rd floor of Mech Eng Building

Problem 1:
Link BD is made of brass (Ebr = 105GPa) and has a cross-sectional area of 240
mm2. Link CE is made of aluminum (Eal = 72GPa) and has a cross-sectional area
of 300 mm2. Knowing that they support rigid member ABC determine the
maximum force P that can be applied vertically at point A if the deflection of A
is not to exceed 0.35 mm.

Problem 2:
The 1.35 m concrete post is reinforced with six steel bars, each with a 28 mm
diameter. Knowing that Es = 200 GPa and Ec = 29 GPa, determine the normal
stresses in the steel and in the concrete when a 1560 kN axial centric force P is
applied to the post.

Problem 3:
A steel tube (Es = 200 GPa) with a 30-mm outer diameter and a 3-mm thickness is
placed in a vise that is adjusted so that its jaws just touch the
ends of the tube without exerting any pressure on them. The two
forces shown are then applied to the tube. After these forces are
applied, the vise is adjusted to decrease the distance between its
jaws by 0.2 mm. Determine (a) the forces exerted by the vise on
the tube at A and D, (b) the change in length of the portion BC of
the tube.

Problem 4:
The rigid bar ABCD is suspended from four identical wires. Determine
the tension in each wire caused by the load P shown. Express your
answers in terms of P.

Problem 5:
The block shown is made of a magnesium alloy, for which
E = 45 GPa and = 0.35. Knowing the x = -180 MPa,
determine a) the magnitude of y for which the change in
height of the block will be zero, (b) the corresponding
change in the area of the face ABCD, (c) the
corresponding change in the volume of the block.

Problem 6:
The plastic block shown is bonded to a rigid support and to a
vertical plate to which a 240-kN load P is applied. Knowing that for
the plastic used, G =1050 MPa, determine the deflection of the
plate.
