IDENTIFY COMPETENCY
NUMBER, LETTER AND
SUBCATEGORY

Major Competency Area: F Respiratory Care

Competency number and letter: F-2 Oxygen Therapy
Subcategory: F-2-1 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to recognize the
indications for administration of oxygen.

DESCRIBE ONE SIGNIFICANT

LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN
THIS COURSE RELATED
TO THE CLPNA COMPETENCY.
PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE

One significant learning experience in this course is learning how to

recognize signs and symptoms to identify whether a client needs oxygen
administration such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, cyanosis,
use of accessory muscles, restlessness, confused, agitated and changes in
vital signs (increased respirations, heart rate, blood pressure and SaO2
less than 95%). In saying this, if you have assessed and identified that
your client have these signs and symptoms of oxygen deprivation by
taking his vital signs and respiratory assessment, he needs to be given
oxygen immediately. An example of this would be, if you found that your
client is cyanotic, having shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, his
oxygen saturation is less than 95 percent and his respiration, heart rate and
blood pressure are all increased, I will check the doctors order first then
administer oxygen to the client.

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU LEARNED

AND HOW IT RELATES TO THE
COMPETENCY. EXPLAIN WHY IT
WAS MEANINGFUL

In this learning experience, I have learned to watch out for signs and
symptoms of oxygen deprivation such as shortness of breath, difficulty
breathing, cyanosis, use of accessory muscles, changes in mental status
(decreased), restlessness, confused, agitated and changes in vital signs
(increased respirations, heart rate, blood pressure and SaO2 less than
95%). Furthermore if I recognized these signs and symptoms I will
administer oxygen to my client as per doctors order. It relates to the
competency because I am using my knowledge and skills that I have
acquired to identify if the client needs to be given oxygen. This learning
was meaningful because by recognizing objective and subjective data that
indicates the need for oxygen, I can prevent the client from experiencing
further complications of oxygen deprivation and I can stabilize the clients
vital signs and oxygen saturation by administering oxygen as early as
possible.

USES THE PROFICIENCY

CATEGORIES TO RATE
THEIR PROFICIENCY IN
THE CHOSEN CLPNA
COMPETENCY. EXPLAIN
WHAT WAS DONE TO
ACHIEVE THE COMPETENCY

I would rate myself as good in demonstrating knowledge and skills in

recognizing assessment data that indicates the need for oxygen
administration. In saying this, I understand the competency in theory
based on the video skills I have watched and through the readings from all
the Medical-Surgical books. Furthermore, I understand the competency in
scenarios and nursing practice because during the Guided Practice with
the help of our instructors we were given scenarios and we were able to
practice with the mannequin, which helped us improve our skills and
familiarize the procedures as well.

Currently, I will apply this learning experience in relating the procedure

with the scenarios in our lab sessions as well as with answering the lab
exercises given to us. Furthermore, in the future when I am already
working as a licensed practical nurse and taking care of real patients, I
will apply the knowledge and skills that I have learned to identify

THIS LEARNING IN YOUR NURSING assessment data that shows the need of oxygen administration such as
difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, use of accessory muscles during

breathing, cyanosis, decreased mental status, restlessness, agitated, SaO2
less than 95% and increased respiratory rate, heart rate and blood
pressure.
