Lesson: Simple Past

Time: 45minutes

Level: Beginner

Date: 19/2/2015

Materials: White Board, Markers, Power Point Presentation, Story passage exercise sheets and simple past exercise sheets.

Objectives:
To ensure that beginner level students are able to:
1. Write the verb in the simple past form.
2. Understand the timeline of the simple past.
3. Actively participate in class through class discussions and
group work

Anticipated problems for Teacher:


1. T may have trouble running into irregular verb endings when dealing with the
simple past.
Solution: T will stay strictly on task and avoid irregular verbs until the next
lesson which will elaborate on irregular verb endings. T will stick to simple
verbs which end with the ed ending.
Anticipated problems for Students:
1. Ss may have Pronunciation problems regarding past participle verbs with the
ed endings.
Solution: Choral drilling of simple past verbs.

T will ask the class what they did yesterday or the day before.
T will give an example answer to the Ss:
T will say I talked to my friend on the phone yesterday

What was common about all statements?
Were the answers related to things which took place in the past?
Which ending did you notice with the verb?
T will present the grammar concept in a PowerPoint presentation.
T will explain the definition of a past simple tense as:
Past simple is used to describe actions which started and ended in the past.

T will write the basic structure of the past simple tense (Verb + ed)

T will present a verb chart with a conversion from the basic verb form to the past.

T will chorally drill the ed words used in the PowerPoint presentation to avoid pronunciation problems.
T will ask CCQs to make sure that the students understand the concept.
Is the ed ending added to words of the present simple tense? Yes or No?
Can a noun be used in a past simple grammar structure? Yes or No? Why?

T will hand out gap fill exercise sheets which will consist of 20 questions.
T will instruct the Ss with the following instructions:
Ss will be required to complete the exercise sheet individually. Ss will look at the question and fill in the appropriate verb in
the past tense while using the hint at the end of each sentence.
I.e. She ________ in the park (Walk)
T will wrap up the exercise by asking Ss to read out the correct answers. T will monitor and correct Ss accordingly.

T will ask the students to form groups of three to encourage pair work.
T will give each group an exercise sheet which will consist of a story that is two paragraphs long. The story will be written
in the present tense and Ss will be required to write the story into the past tense using the proper grammar.
