TG Museunnm Lee wg eoire aamea ale, CATALOGUE OF GREEK COINS. THE TAURIC CHERSONESE, SARMATIA, DACIA, MOESIA, THRACE, &c. REGINALD, 8) THRACE AND THE ISLANDS, BY BARCLAY V. HEAD: THE REST OF THE VOLUME, BY PERCY GARDNER, M.A, LONDON: PRINTED BY ORDER OF THE TRUSTEES. 1877. ve PREFACE. ‘A rew words of explanation are necessary as to the system of arrangement which has been adopted in the present volume of the Catalogue. Tt has been found that, in nearly all cases, the autonomous coins of the various cities sould de claased under three or-more Periods, such as, Before ‘and After Aléxaridar the Great, Before and During the Period of Roman Deminion. The coins of Thrace, in some instances. az ct Thasot, have been attributed with greater minuteness to the centuries to which, from con- siderations of history or style, they appear to belong. The standards of weight according to which the gold and silver money of each class was issued, have been added where- ever it has been found practicable. The nomenclature of the weight-standards is that of the late Dr. J. Brandis, occasionally modified to suit the requirements of the English language. The coins of Lysimachus have been reserved for the volumes describing the coinage of the successors of Alexander. The Appendix consists wholly of coins forming part of the munificent gift of the Governor and Company of the Bank of vi PREFACE. England, the presentation having been made too recently for the coins to be described in their proper places. The metal of each coin and its size is stated in inches and tenths. The weight is given in English grains of all gold and silver coins. Tables for converting grains into grammes, and inches into millimétres, as well as into the measures of Mionnet’s Scale, are placed at the end of the volume (pp. 272 499). REGINALD STUART POOLE.
