I.
Describe Art Nouveau style
--started as a reaction to academic art
--Arthur Mackmurdo's book-cover for Wren's City
Churches (1883) is often considered the first realization of Art
Nouveau.
-About the same time, the flat perspective and strong colors
of Japanese wood block prints, especially those of Katsushika
Hokusai, had a strong effect on the formulation of Art
Nouveau
-1894 Alphonse Mucha went into a print shop who needed
poster for a play that was coming out in Paris starring the
famous Sara Bernhardt
--in 2 weeks Mucha did a design and it was chose. It was
placed all around the city.
--poster was very popular and as a result owner of print shop
gave him a six-year contract
-while he was happy to have become famous he was
frustrated that his designs were considered a fashionable
stylistic form
- he wanted recognition for his paintings because to him their
purpose was to communicate a spiritual message
-Lived in Paris for many years, but later in life moved back to
Czech Republic
-in the late 1930s his artworks were considered reactionary
nationalism
-in 1939 when Nazis came into Czechoslovakia he was the
first to be arrested by the Gestapo
-developed pneumonia while in custody.
-although he was released soon after he died, and some think
he got weak while in custody of Germans
-Czechs are very proud of him and have a museum dedicated
to him in Prague
