P2University of Manchester Lesson Plan

Subject: English
Lesson context
In this lesson, the
children will learn how
and when to use
brackets effectively in
their writing. Some will
extend this and learn
about parenthesis and
the other forms of
punctuation which can
be used to mark
parenthesis.

Class: Y5
Childrens learning from
previous lesson S2b, S6b
In the previous lesson, pupils
will have written the opening of
their narrative. They have not
covered using brackets
recently and so do not often
use them sophisticatedly in
their writing, although they
should be familiar with them.

Date: 2/12/2014

Formative assessment and feedback (S6)

To challenge and extend the
pupils my questions are: S1b,
S6b

What techniques and

strategies am I using to assess
the learning? (S6b)

How and when we I give

oral/written feedback to the
pupil against the success
criteria so that they can
respond?(S6d, S2a)

How are brackets used in these texts?

What is additional information?
What is wrong with this sentence?
Why should we not use brackets too frequently?
What other forms of punctuation can we use to mark parenthesis?
Why would you use commas here and not brackets?
Investigative activity chance to see what pupils already know and
how quickly they can understand the different uses.
Listening in to talk partners and feeding back to class with the
misconceptions activity.

Floating specifically to LA children and to those who sometimes
attempt too high on the mountain, also try and speak to Phoebe
(confidence).
Plenary do the children understand how to use them effectively?
Investigate activity gives me the opportunity to speak to different
pairs and individuals to give VF.
VF to class when we share findings, discuss R2s and address
misconceptions.
Detailed VF to guided group.
Float and give VF to key individuals.
Written feedback marking.

10 mins
Introduce LOs and explain that today
we are going to learn how to use
brackets in our writing, but that I want
them to come up the different ways in
which we can and should use brackets.

There are 6 different texts to look at,

but that does not mean 6 different
ways to use them.

10 mins

Children take whiteboards and pens

and try and read all 6 extracts. They
record what they think the different
uses of brackets are.
Discuss as a class, show R2s.
for each (2 slides of R2s one clear for
independent work and one with
examples to help LA if they didnt stop
them)

Children move about the classroom

reading the different example sentences,
they note down the different ways that
they see brackets being used on their
whiteboards.
Children share what they have seen and
see a written example for each use of
brackets.
Children consider possible errors which
they could make and become aware of
these before they start writing.

Show them some bad examples of

brackets and change to make them
good.
Send children off to work. Reminder
that top of the mountain need to write
at least two good sentences correctly
demonstrating the use of brackets
before they go and watch the video.
Guided group MA:
Connie, Raven, Zohaib, Vanessa,
Amees, Sami Z.
Work on how we can use brackets to
improve the quality of our writing.
Importance of using them correctly and
not overusing them. Create sentences
for all four uses together and then let
them split up into smaller groups to
make their own.
Plenary: Texts where they need to take
out some of the brackets due to
overuse.

Practising using brackets for the different

reasons, looking at trying to create
sophisticated examples s well as correctly
punctuated examples. Children respond
to teachers instructions and questions.

Children consider how overuse of

brackets can make a text sound clumsy
and are reminded that using brackets
correctly includes using then sparsely
and when necessary.
