They are listening and c ontributing their own, original ideas to a disc ussion. They are making eyec ontac t and demonstrating non-verbal responses to the disc ussion (when they're not adding to it). If
it is an independent, by-themselves ac tivity, I look for body language showing they are foc used on
the task and ac tively working to c omplete it. If we're reading, I look for trac king and verbal
responses to what they've read (showing they're making a c onnec tion). When they ask questions
about something, it shows me they are thinking about it or proc essing the information.
