Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and
word analysis skills in decoding words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.4 Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and
understanding.
Objectives: After using a mentor text to identify "people" TSWBAT brainstorm at least
three people onto the Noun Anchor Chart and identify nouns from the books in their book
bag.
Materials: Anchor Chart, Leveled Book Bags, Nouns (People) Handout, A Mink, a Fink,

Procedures:
Introduction: Ask students to think of a person they remember to pair share and
add to the anchor chart. People belong to a special group of words called nouns.
Body: Show YouTube clip to explain how people are nouns. Explain to students
they will be looking for nouns in their read-to-self, read-to-someone, guided
reading, etc. and list on noun (people) handout to share during mirroring.
Closing: After each round (mirroring), students will share nouns they found and
explain more nouns will be found tomorrow. Use A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink:
What Is a Noun by Brian Cleary and A Lime, a Mime, a Pool of Slime: More
about Nouns by Brian Cleary as other examples.
Assessment: Teacher observation, student participation, student accuracy
Management Issues, Transitions, and Differentiation: If necessary use sayings and
gestures for noise level, use chime to transition rounds. Students who write regularly will
list nouns. Students who do not write regularly will draw nouns and write sounds.
