Q. 1. (a) Why do you think the statue of a dog was such an important landmark in Tokyo?

Ans. A professor named Hidesaburo Ueno from the University of Tokyo, was the original owner of Hachiko, an
Akita pet who always greeted him when he returned from work in the evening. One day he had a cerebral hemorrhage and never came back to the station to find his faithful dog waiting for him. The statue was erected to commemorate the faithfulness of the dog to his owner.
(b) From the passage write the description of an Akita dog.

Ans. Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor at the University of Tokyo, took in Hachiko, a golden brown Akita, as a pet.
Hachiko greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until
May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never
returning to the train station where Hachiko was waiting. Each day for the next nine years Hachiko awaited Ueno's
return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station. This shows the loyalty and faithfulness of dog
towards his master.
(c) What did Hachiko do while his owner was at work?

Ans. Professor Hidesaburo Ueno lived in Tokyo with his beloved Akita named Hachiko. Everyday Hachiko
would see Ueno off to work from his home and then, at the end of the day, greet him at the nearby Shibuya Train
Station. One day in May 1925 would be the end of their daily routine together, for Ueno suffered a fatal stroke during
his day at work. He never returned to his faithful friend that day nor any day thereafter.
(d) Why did the people of Tokyo get the statue of Hachiko replaced?

Ans. The people recognized Hachiko from his prior rendezvous with Ueno. Knowing about Ueno's death, they
were deeply touched by this act of loyalty and brought him food. Eventually the story spread about Hachiko.
A former student of Professor Uenos heard of Hachikos vigil and went to the station to see the loyal Akita.
Fascinated by Hachiko, the former student wrote several papers on him. In 1932, one of these papers was published
in Tokyos largest newspaper. This article threw Hachiko into Japans national spotlight.
Hachiko became the personification of loyalty. In 1934, a well-known Japanese artist sculpted a likeness of
Hachiko to be placed at the entrance of Shibuya Station; in the same area he waited for his long-deceased master.
(e) Give a title to the story. Give reasons why you think your title is appropriate.

Ans. The Vigil Ends: On March 8 1935, eleven years after it started, Hachiko's vigil came to an end. At almost
12 years old, the Akita succumbed to heart-worm disease. The nation of Japan mourned the loss of their most
beloved canine.

the same pattern and we residents are duped inside 'our own sector'.

Police: Such incidents encourage the miscreants to carry on their ways. But if we have to counter this, we have
to change ourselves. Why do we have to wear gold ornaments when they lure the youngsters? Why give them a
chance? Sure enough it entails tradition for married and the elders, but with changing time when circumstances do
not permit to follow traditions then why risk the life?
There have been cases when the ladies are alert and have been able to save their ornament and raise alarm. But
there may be chances that some of these boys in self-defence may harm the ladies. There are chances of minor to
