Math
Right now we are working on
many types of word problems:
missing addend, starting unknown,
two-step, and hidden information
problems. Many of the teachers
have identified the most powerful
strategy for solving a problem. Its
simple actually. Reread. Reread.
Reread.

Reading has changed since you and I were in school.

The task seems to be the same open a book and read. But, today teachers are
asking, or should be asking, their students to think more deeply about books
than ever before. The ability to retell a story clearly to a listener is crucial, and
doing that should not end. Even as adults dont you love to hear a good book or
movie plot explained clearly? I saw the best movie over the weekend.
In addition to being able to retell a story now we are asking that students
consider character motivations ( What possible do you think the Cat is acting
this way?) author choices ( Why do you think that Roald Dahl makes books
about kids with special powers so often?) and interesting literary devices like
idioms ( barking up the wrong tree). In second grade we are not expecting
mastery. We are simply inviting them to start thinking in new ways about books.

I Dont Even Know Where to Begin

Try some of these questions when youre reading together.
1. What do you think ______________ wants right now more than anything?
2. What things might be standing in the way of ___________ getting it?
3. Why is ____________ behaving like this?
4. Why do you think the author keeps mentioning ______________?
5. What is the weird thing about this?
You have a reader now. You can talk to them about books and in enjoy the
conversation. Keep it real. Keep it fun. Try it.

lies while its alive,
