Askstudentstotellwhatisthefirstthingtheydointhemorningtogetreadyforschool.
(Responses:getdressed,eatbreakfast,etc.)Askwhatistheveryfirstthingtheymustdo.
(Responses:getoutofbed).Onceagainaskwhatmusttheydobeforedoinganyofthose
things.(i.e.Wakeup)DrawaFlowchartontheboardandaskstudentsiftheyknowforwhat
purposewecanuseflowcharts.Tellstudentsthatflowchartscanbeusedtodiagramthe
individualsequencesorstepsinacomplexprocess(suchasgettingreadyforschool).

Studentswillneedapieceofnotebookpaper.Askthemtocreateaflowchartdiagramming
theirprocessofgettingtoschoolinthemorning.Whenfinishedaskseveralstudentstoshare
theircharts.Asagroupdiscussiftheirflowchartsmakesenseandaccuratelydiagrameach
stepincorrectsequence.

ReviewthepurposeofFlowchartsandwhattheylooklike.ShowstudentstheGettingReady
intheMorningflowchartfromthepreviousday.Takeoutthegetoutofbedstepandask
studentshowthataffectstherestofthesequence.Explainthatiftheychangeastepinthe
sequenceitwillmostlikelyaffecttheentirerestoftheprocess.Tellstudentstheywillwritea
programthatwillnavigatetheirrobotthroughamaze.Explaintothemthatitwillbeacomplex
processandthatthesequenceoftheirprogramwillbeveryimportant.Askthemwhatcanwe
