ID Brief for Narrated Animation

Title or Topic of Animation: Gestalt Principle of Similarity

Date Created: 3/3/15
Designers Name: Nikki Marcel
Time: approx. 1 minute
General Overview/Need:
The animation is designed to give a brief illustration of the Gestalt Principle of Similarity.
It uses animation show a few different representations of the principle. The instruction
is needed because it makes the principle more clear when viewing it in
animated/illustrated form.
Justification for Animation:
Narrated animation is appropriate for this instruction because having the animation will
draw the learners attention to the details that are important to the principle. For
example, having an animation of items in a group being circled draws the learners
attention to the detail of that particular grouping.
Audience/Learners:
This narrated animation is designed to be brief and concise so learners who need a
visual to understand the principle can use it as a quick reference or reinforcement. Prior
knowledge of the principle is not necessary, but the briefness of the animation may not
be sufficient for all learners as a stand-alone instruction, so a reference to more
information will be given at the end for further exploration by the learner, if desired.
Learners must have access to the internet to view the animation.
Instructional/ Cognitive/Multimedia Strategies:
A number of different examples will be illustrated and discussed in order to give the
learner many chances to better understand the principle. In addition, a chance for the
learner to test their knowledge will be available at the end of the module, with the
correct answer shown for a self-check. Bright, distinct colors will be used for clear
illustrations, with a simple background for contrast, and bold, animated circles will be
used to clearly illustrate the groupings. The narration will be clear and simple for all
learners to understand.
Delivery/Use Instructions:
The module must be accessed via the internet and will be available through the
following: Flash (web), HTML5 (mobile), and YouTube (video). All devices used to

access the module must have functioning sound in order to experience the full
instruction.
Resources Used:
This eLearning project was created using Articulate Storyline 2. All illustrations and
animations were created with the tools available in that program. Narration was
recorded using an iPhone5 with external lavalier microphone and uploaded into the
project. Camtasia Studio 8 was used to screen cast the instruction for video upload to
YouTube. Information for the instruction was found in Jeff Johnsons book, Designing
with the Mind in Mind: Simple Guide to Understanding User Interface Design Rules.
