Developed in 1860s in Paris

Term was coined in 1874 by Louis Leroy

Upon seeing Impression: Sunrise by Claude Monet

Reaction from the invention of camera

Capture the world (natural world), landscapes and natural light

Reproduce nature

Expressionism

Originated in Germany in the 20th Century

Highly subjective and personal

Form of self expression

Convey personal feelings about the object being painted

Does not deal with objective reality

Subjective emotions and responses of a person

Through distortion, exaggeration

Vivid, violent or dynamic application of formal elements

Expressionism

The artists shows his own image of the object

Accurate representation of its real meaning for him

Reality is distorted and exaggerated for emotional effect

Not to replicate the impression inferred but rather enforce artists own
emotional response to distinguish its true meaning

Bold, distorted lines, rough brushstrokes and strong colors to invoke


emotional response
