Hegel's Philosophy of Science.

On the Concept of Wissenschaft.

Roi Bar

Abstract
In what way can Wissenschaft be said to be the crown of the world of Geist?
What is the kind of knowledge that is Wissenschaft? Hegels ambitious task of
scientifying philosophy supplies a unique framework for dealing with the same
demarcation problem that the contemporary science theory deals with. The lack
of solution to this problem leads to the alleged insurmountable dualism of the
sciences and the humanities and thus to the humanities crisis.
Nevertheless, due to the prevailing naturalistic doxa of science which conceives
of science as natural science, Hegels system of thought is commonly not even
regarded by contemporary researchers as science or as philosophy of science.
Rather, Hegel is being depicted as a confirmed naturalist.
In order to go beyond this natural belief, against which Hegel himself argues,
and to come to think of science in its fundamental sense as an ontological
universal concept, it is required to question Hegels conception of Wissenschaft
in its interconnection with Wissen and Bewusstsein. The key concepts of science
and con-sciousness should be translated back into English.
