Instructional Procedures:
BeforeTeacher will inform students that they will be completing a short lesson on
summarizing text. The teacher will ask students to share what they already know about
summarizing text before he/she provides students with information. The teacher will
record students responses on the board for later comparison.
Duringthe teacher will use the gradual release technique to review concepts with
students. The teacher will display the passage Found! on a projector. Students will
read it aloud. The teacher will inform students that a summary is a short response that
tells a reader the main points of a passage; she will continue by saying, we will
describe what takes place in our passage by focusing on the beginning, middle, and
end. The teacher will then summarize the passage by underlining important facts
within the text (teacher will reword sentences if needed). The teacher will then repeat
the three parts again so that the summary is clear. Students will be given an
opportunity to ask questions about the process.

AfterStudents will buddy with a partner to practice summarizing. As they read the printed
text First Snow, they will be asked to focus on the most important sentences that will
describe what happened first, next, and last. Invite some students to share their summaries
